Houzz Tour: A Barn Conversion Characterful Gets an extension Clever - When interior designer Rosie Winston and architect Mark Ruthven visited this property with potential buyers, he had already undergone significant works. 'The barn was not farming, we inherited as something that had already been converted, "says Rosie. "But we knew they wanted to do more of it," adds Mark. The group went directly to the local planning authority to propose an extension, even if the building is not listed or in a conservation area, and there is nothing for miles around, they were rejected. "Planners would not have all this, Mark said. The return to London was marked by deflation and disappointment until ...
We were in the car on the way home and thought suddenly that if we make a basement beneath the barn? "Explains Mark. "People are paying huge amounts of adding basements in cities due to lack of space, and it seemed absurd at first to do it for a house standing on 10 acres of land, but the shell n was never going to provide all dwellings and a basement turned out to be a very nice solution. although the barn had been converted into a house, much of it was not done particularly well, says designer and architect . the bridge seen here was kept, and a staircase leading down to it from the other side, but almost everything else has been removed, reconfigured and refinished by Mark and Rosie.
They took down a previous extension and had a large (2500 square feet) underground set under a new (1500 square feet) extension storey. This 4000 square feet of additional space above the original barn, which is about 2500 square feet.
Now, the barn houses two double bedrooms with bathroom, dressing room, living room, dining room and study. The extension Bungalow is home to the kitchen, boot room, laundry room and garage, while two double bedrooms with bathrooms, a games room, music studio, plant room, gym, sauna and steam bath are mounted in the basement.

fitting light above the large dining table tailor was a tricky one to ride because he was to be hanged in part to the full height ceiling and partly from the bridge. Rosie wanted to keep it pretty simple, so as not to distract from the Bruce Munro installed on the other side of the bridge. Walnut Cherner side chairs, with Cherner chair at the head of the table, lend a modern touch to the space, with the dark color and then picked up in the guardrail and luminaire.
