Houzz Tour: A Contemporary, Ecofriendly Home on an Australian vineyard - recently retired and looking for a change, homeowners fell on a rural property on the Mornington Peninsula, the surrounded by vineyards and views breathtaking. Hoping to design a house that embraced the beautiful surroundings, they sought the help of experts from Mihaly Slocombe.
"We were still students, and then, at the end of our first year of study architecture, architect Mihaly Warwick remembers. "We designed the house for aging well, with generous spaces that connect together in an easy way. White is the only color of the paint we used - the rest of our color palette comes from the red floor and ironbark carpentry wood, and yellow mud walls. We let nature do the table!

"We have also extended the indoor living space outside in the landscape through bridges, a vegetable garden, lawn areas, a cricket pitch and a 25m lap pool. This way, live on the vineyard is outdoors as it does indoors, "said Mihaly.

Seen here through the vineyards, the house now affectionately nicknamed "Hill house" was on two levels, the northern half filled with spaces and the wing of the house of masters of life, and southern half of the guest rooms and a second living room.
"All rooms are filled with the north light throughout the year. The northern half of the house has an expansive view through the beautiful landscape Mornington Peninsula, while the southern half is more intimate, overlooking the lush Australian native garden surrounding the house, "describes Mihaly.

Light streams in the suite above. The bathroom, like other parts of the house is designed to be as practical as it is elegant. Not only glass allows light to flow through - accented by wooden fittings - but the room was completely waterproofed. The shower was equipped with a membrane on wet plaster zone; the shower screen was silicone on all edges and the shower door has a rubber water stop along its lower edge.

In the living room the provision of soft furniture and a window wall concertina lead to the outdoor life platform, providing an indoor and outdoor connection.
A key theme of Hill House is that it encourages incredibly ecofriendly habits and environmental awareness around it. With the help of intelligent heating and plumbing systems, and a solar panel 10 kW ground mounted, the house and the vineyard are a positive energy. No air conditioning needed.
"We also incorporated many passive design principles in the house, including the appropriate orientation north of living areas, eaves to protect the windows, loose insulation in roofs and walls, exposed thermal mass of the concrete slab and rammed earth walls and double glazing throughout, to make the space as comfortable as possible.

'We strongly agree with the antipathy of the Robin Boyd end to featurism. We try to make all our holistic projects as they can be. A house can have many parts, some of which are unique and especially delicious, but they are all subordinated to all, said Mihaly.
'Central to our project design intentions was a desire for the house to be a living part of the daily habits of our customers. So instead of automating climate control through the expensive electronic systems, we did all the moving parts of the manually operated home. The windows, which help cool the house at night are all operated by hand or, for the slats of high-level, expandable rod with a hook at the end. Stores must be raised and lowered to control glare and heat. zoning doors must be opened and closed to minimize winter heating needs

"as soon as they moved in eight years ago to today, the owners liked Hill House. Natural materials are resistant to slowly over time and become more and more integrated into the natural landscape. It is a central point of the vineyard and opens the field nicely. The house works extremely well in the unpredictable climate of Victoria, demonstrates the value of good design of passive environment and passion of the owners for environmental sustainability, "says Mihaly.
