"For years we have renovated the old houses, turning them into something new, which is great, but we were really excited to build from the ground, said Cortney. They added three additional stages during the conversion of two garage floors. "It was difficult to build a new house with six children and another on the way, and it was a little scary to start from scratch, because we had never done before. However, that is what makes rewarding - we had our seventh child, and the house was just our baby, too, "she said. "While it was made of memories."

A big plus for the property is the single garage, something notoriously difficult to find in Manhattan. "The motorcycle shop had the makings of a garage, and we could use for our cars," said Cortney. The garage and driveway occupy the entire ground floor, increasing the living areas well off the street level to give the privacy of the family and the isolation of the street noise. The British pop artist Richard Woods commanded torque to create an installation on the facade. The faux wood panels lend visual interest and good humor outside dose.

"While the court provides a place where the eldest son of the couple, Wolfgang, can hone his skills as a player of basketball, it also serves as a space entertainment. "We knew we needed to use the space efficiently so that it can work for all, says Cortney. It has become a go-to space for everything from watching movies on a retractable screen to host 40 dinner guests Thanksgiving. There was even a haunted house.
