Houzz Tour: A Thoughtfully modernized Victorian House in North London - When the owners of this house of two levels in north London first bought the property, it was in need of a update. Peel back the wallpaper, they found layer upon layer of history and toyed with the idea of preserving everything, but after examining their needs, they decided to reconfigure existing spaces with the help of 'Trevor Brown architect. "Sometimes you think you need to restore a home, then you realize that it may work for a small area, but not necessarily for the entire project," says Brown. So the walls were removed, modern and functional spaces were created, and select original features have been preserved and restored to maintain the Victorian character of the house.

The design that carries through this house is simple and sober. The owners have a "revolving collection" of furniture, art and accessories, and a clean background is perfect to show their pieces of the moment, such as the slippers on the mantelpiece. Architecture and interior design should last 10-15 years - you can not impose a space that is always changing, says Brown.
The backlight also allows rich materials furniture - wood, marble, leather - to sit against it without fighting for attention. The owners are from most furniture of secondhand stores, eBay and Gumtree, and recovery yards; some pieces are heirlooms

"We had the chance to do something really spectacular and beautiful here, says Brown marble credenzas and antique glass. The cooktop is shallower than the worktop, so he built the wall and used the ancient glass to fill the void; it creates a good complement to the marble.
