Houzz Tour: An Ultra-modern house that reaches for the Light - When architect John Dyer Grimes received a phone call from a dilapidated house on a plot of land in Surrey, he would never have imagined the ambitious plans the new owners had in store for the site. With their teens about to fly the nest, the couple decided they were tired of maintaining their beautiful Grade II listed house and were willing to take a dramatic change.
"They explained they had always dreamed of building an ultra-modern home, but when they were first thought to do it 20 years ago, there was much less the contemporary architecture around, and time does not seem right, "John said. "Now they found their heritage home a huge drain on their time and resources, so they wanted to do a U-turn and create a super-sustainable house with all modern comforts.
The slope was long and narrow and surrounded by trees, which poses a number of challenges for the architect. "There was already a prefabricated bungalow on the site, we immediately demolished," says John. "But the main challenge was in thinking about how to approach the layout of the new house. We wanted to make the most of available light, but the strip of land was very narrow and completely shaded on one side by trees. "
futuristic John tore the rule book, pushing the side of the house against all the trees. storage and utility rooms were placed at the back, allowing him to open the front of the house - which included the living room, kitchen and dining room - natural light whenever possible.
"The couple wanted the new house to be away from their old place, and they certainly got what they asked, 'John said. "A classic property would never have worked on this site - is so narrow and shady. This contemporary cantilever design draws the surrounding landscape into the house and maximizes views from the first floor overlooking the rolling countryside.
The winning house is now complete and is a masterpiece of clean, ergonomic life. He even provided the couple with an unexpected new revenue streams. "Its striking design has attracted the attention of a number of producers and music video directors, John said, then the pair now manage a movie rental business from home.

'Another side has a glass infinity edge, so that it functions as a water feature which is also very nice visually. "John raised the pool above ground level for dramatic effect, while the decking area on one side, it is convenient to bask in the summer.

John opted for the wood to soften the otherwise white facade. "The window frames are made of bronze, which works very well with the white walls and screens of wood, he said. 'The screens can be used to protect the living space of the sun, but their main purpose is to articulate the architecture of the facade and make it more interesting. "

the cantilever staircase seems to float gently down to the floor to ceiling window on the landing upstairs, and is cleverly supported by a metal column and the glass balustrade. "We tried to keep the structure as little as possible to avoid crushing the staircase space. When you walk through the front door, it really just seems to float in the air, "John said.

the long, expansive island in the kitchen area also features walnut woodwork, referencing the stairs and floor elsewhere in the house. "We wanted to keep it as minimal as possible, so we created together an integrated storage wall against the back wall of the kitchen," says John. "This kind of exposed contemporary design would not work without storage to keep it clean and tidy.

owners enjoy entertaining when they can, and found the small room layout quite restrictive in their old heritage home. "This house has been very well designed as a holiday home for family and friends to gather in, and the open layout makes this very efficiently," said John.

Bespoke benches around the kitchen island offers ample seating for relaxed dinners and family gatherings. "The couple really appreciate home," John said. "In their old house, they had an Aga and everyone was literally crushed around a small table in the corner of the kitchen for informal dinners. They found a very old way of life, which is why they were so eager to embrace a totally different way of life.
