Houzz Tour: A New Forest New construction treading lightly on the ground - When Clare and Jonathan Potter bought a plot of land in the heart of the New Forest, to build their own home, they were determined to embrace a sustainable life. The land is nestled in 18 acres of beautiful ancient forest, and the new wooden chalet they had in mind was to respect the luscious surroundings while offering a contemporary space with low energy life.
'planning permission was always going to be a challenge, "said the architect Darren Bray," but the low altitude, the vernacular structure we finally opted for the seat in perfect harmony with the landscape.
fundamental to memory was a natural swimming pond. "It is on the south side of the house and is located off the main living areas," says Darren. "The place is very calm and the pond was icing on the cake."

Darren used ipe wood - known for its dense wear resistant properties - for lining and the external decking area. It also has a chain of custody, so he could not be sure it comes from a sustainable source. "We introduced the shutters outside the building to help prevent too much heat in the summer," he says. "They also help reduce glare from the windows."

ensure plenty of natural light was an integral part of the design that Clare and Jonathan wanted to keep energy consumption to a minimum. "The kitchen, dining and living rooms only really need artificial light from about 9:30 p.m. in the summer, the sun pours through the large windows, said Darren.

gain and photovoltaic solar panels were used throughout the property in order to keep the carbon footprint of the couple to an absolute minimum. "During the summer they are almost off the grid," says Darren. "It is incredibly durable; they are probably power supply to the network. "The couple also has their own installation of wastewater treatment.

a wall spine concrete is on the ground floor in the basement and acts as a thermal mass, canceling temperature fluctuations. It absorbs heat during the day and a light roof facing north releases heat at night. The house is also isolated by a mound of earth on the north side of the property. "We created a dirt berm with the earth that came out of the excavation," says Darren. "We do not want it to end in a landfill." The berm also acts as an acoustic baffler, sultry sound of a nearby road.

Douglas fir was used to create the wall of the concrete spine, leaving a wonderfully textured footprint once it has been removed. "The wood used for this type of wall is generally sent to landfill, but that was out of the question given the lasting nature of the construction," says Darren. After careful consideration, it was re-used as a coating on the car port.

'Space the house is quite limited, so it was important to get the layout of the open-kitchen dining / living room just right, "says Darren. "It is compact, but we managed to create a natural flow from one area to another." The work plans are precast concrete mass, creating an elegant, simple finish which subtly refers wall spinal concrete column. For their heating and hot water, Clare and Jonathan rely on a geothermal heat pump.

a wood stove built into the fireplace is a nice option in winter, improve the comfortable log cabin feeling of space. With an entire forest as their garden, the couple has an endless supply of firewood, but they also benefit from underfloor heating.

Jonathan and Claire challenged us to create a breathtaking view of the lake from the master bedroom, Darren said. The answer was a zinc window dressed with a revolving door, allowing the pair to swing their toes in the natural pond if they wish. The rest of the room was simple, with oak flooring Engineered providing a natural setting for the stunning views.

in sub soil, natural light floods into the rooms through skylights cut into the berm of soil above ground. The back wall is a continuation of the spine concrete. The room was kept deliberately simple in order to let the natural impression of wood on the stage of the concrete outlet center.
