My Houzz: a Creative Studio art director in Manhattan - A meager 330 square feet may not seem to leave room for flexibility, but Michelle Konar put her creativity to work in this small space . An art director in a marketing communications firm, she enjoyed the view of the Hudson River and transformed his studio on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, in a chic space. Smartly repurposed vintage treasures and crafts custom pieces have transformed this small apartment in a comfortable house that showcases the artistic talents of Michelle.

When Michelle moved to New York, she under-letted a place in Brooklyn with friends and said she'd never find a place in Manhattan in its scale price. "I always liked this area," she said. "It's just between Riverside Park and Central Park, and I love to cook, to have a Fairway Market, Zabar's, Whole Foods and now a Trader Joe's -. I mean, you can not beat that "

This type of vintage tray, found the market Sunday flea on 76th Street and Columbus Avenue, now serves as a jewelry holder. Other trays around the apartment act as creative storage units.

Michelle did this series of five paintings by a bit of trial and error. I took a suitable fabric and extended around the canvas and then painted, she said. "What I did not know that the fabric would just soak in. It took four coats of paint on each to get it to look just right.

Michelle studied graphic design at Rhode Island School of design. Besides his full-time job, she creates and sells unique newspapers and hand sewn textiles kitchen through her Etsy shop, ShopONA.

Michelle got creative with his kitchen backsplash. "Initially, I put up a large cork board roll, but it would expand and contract, and began to crack. It fell apart in a month, "she said. As a compromise, she cut the cork down to the size of subway tiles, and has weathered since it was put in place just a few months.

Michelle tied the colored tiles cork to his wall using simple adhesive tapes 3M, it can easily be removed when moving. The small size means it needed to use a single tape to secure room, and tiles can still expand and contract.

Michelle would like to refinish market flea buffet at some point, once she decides what to do with it.

Michelle bought this little Safari cardboard cardboard deer head and upgraded with decorative papers. "It was a fun little project and adds a little humor to an empty space otherwise, she said.

in the door, Michelle creatively arranged linoleum block carvings of his days of art school to blend in around the light and buzzer switch. "I designed and carved the blocks, and then used them in a typography to make cards, she said. "I always thought the carved block was as interesting a room designed as the last card, so I kept the blocks and painted black raised portions.
Besides his display of blocks is another DIY project. Michelle covered a magnetic table from Ikea with decorative paper using Mod Podge. "Photos of friends and family, things that I think are well designed or places that I want to remember are displayed there. It's probably the most personal and sentimental place in the apartment.

Michelle said " as artistic director, a lot of what I do is 2-D. I like having a 3-D space to use and play with patterns. "

Michelle considers himself lucky to have an outside patio in Manhattan. "I like sitting there with my morning coffee, inviting friends for a cocktail or curling up with a book and a blanket after work, she said. "There is a relaxation area and a beautiful view of the Hudson River.
