Houzz Tour: At Home With ... Kate Watson-Smyth Mad About The House - With a history of houses and renovating a background as a journalist of the property, Kate Watson-Smyth was the perfect person to take on a Victorian house unloved in north London and return it to its former glory.
I saw this on a website the day before we were due back from our summer vacation, "Kate said. The property was a wreck and was divided into two rental apartments; the ground floor apartment was empty for three years. It was a difficult project that took time and money and, Kate said, "I still do not know what possessed us!" But the end result is an elegant and spacious family with bags of character. Try below to see the final result.

what you start blogging?
I am a journalist who worked for the national press for the last 20 years. I started as a news reporter and turned to freelance feature writing my eldest son [now nearly 15] was born. I wrote about the property and interiors for The Independent The Financial Times and The Daily Mail .
The blog came about as a way to find a place to put all the things that are not in the papers I still thought were worthy of coverage - small designers, interesting products - as well that creating a place to share all interior design tips I've picked experts after years of their interviews for newspapers.

how long have you lived here and how did you and your home meet?
I lived here for exactly five years - we moved to December 10, 2010. We had been moving for years - buying, selling and doing - and we were looking for a forever home that was an appropriate project. We do not want another job redecorating; This time we wanted the full experience.
I still do not know what possessed us! Wrecks are hard to find, but I saw it on a website the day before we were due back from our summer vacation. We called and booked an appointment for the next day. We have seen from some other interested parties, but we had to end.

What was the house like when you first moved in?
It was divided into two rental apartments. The floor three-bedroom duplex has been decorated to rent and never actually leased, even if she had painted magnolia woodchip paper and a bright blue carpet, it was at least new and clean.
The bottom had been empty for three years and was hideous. There was a kitchen partially installed with a concrete floor, a hole in the floor of the living room I came every time I went there on the way to the bathroom and cigarette ash in the fireplace.
Haresfield gray velvet sofa, Sofas and Stuff.

We restored to a single house, replaced the aluminum windows with wooden frames, took modern doors, stripped the woodchip, extended and reconfigured the kitchen down flat to its original configuration, creating a lounge, a library and a kitchen-dining room. Upstairs, we have added a bathroom and have recently converted the loft in an office / workshop.

What's next great decorating project?
Well, just after the loft, I have to say we're done, but of course we are not. In the new year we will have a little tweak of the kitchen.
We need a new cooktop, which, as it is an odd size will result in a new work plan on the island ; I plan to concrete. Then we'll dress up the ends of the island in the same box as the ceiling (I do not know why we do not do this to begin with), and closet doors need to go dark gray with beige leather handles.
Next we'll be done ... No. Probably.

what makes you most happy at home?
Being here is the short answer. I love it when everyone, but all do different things and wandering in and out of rooms to see what others are doing. Or we eat a meal together in the family, which has now become a thing of pleasure rather than a real food fight, as with toddlers.
We try to have dinner together Friday night every week and it has become a ritual. Recently, I invited some friends to join us and the boys were really cross because they consider that the time of the sacred family that nobody else should come.

What is your favorite place in the house and why?
therefore, difficult to answer this question. In the afternoon, when I'm supposed to work, but do not want to be in my office, I want to sit in the library, which has a beautiful view of the living room.
When I have all day to stay at my desk and write, I like being in the newly converted loft, which offers stunning views of the park.

Something old, something new, something black and gold something. Stick that in every room and you will not go wrong. I mean gold metal but scans better that way.

Well, since my first book, which is in February, is called Shades of Grey , I have to say the gray trend is as follows than that there to stay.

what do you like to do on Sunday afternoon?
now that my children are old enough to go out and do their own thing, my husband and I quite like to pour a glass of wine and watch a movie on a Sunday post midday. That fantasy, anyway. The reality is that I often wrote Monday's blog and is catching up on things he did not have time to do during the week and prepare one ahead.
