Houzz Tour: A Lakeside House that meets everyone's needs - An old problem there for families - and extended families - that is, so of course everyone loves another and wants to spend time together, sometimes people just need their space. This was the case when a Washington couple and their two adult children - one is married with three children, the other is a chef - decided to pool resources and build a family vacation cottage on Lake Coeur d 'Alene in northern Idaho around.
But how four people two generations with different needs and styles to create a dream home together? Matthew Collins architect Uptic Studios responded with what he called pods - separate areas in the home that offer privacy, a spacious living room that the main socializing area.

Collins had to find the happy medium design for two generations. The old couple wanted a more traditional style log cabin. Their children wanted something more modern. They finished with a modern interpretation of a log cabin that mixes concrete floors, a pine ceiling and metal accents.
And while everyone has separate areas for private pod, they all interact in the open living areas, dining room and kitchen.

many of the homes in the area are designed with extreme seasons in mind: it is very hot in summer and below freezing in winter. This results in aesthetic which carries a certain "beefiness" as Collins met.
A large cantilever roof protects the house and its area of terraces cantilevered from the sun, rain and snow, with a design philosophy that keeps the exposed structure.
The underside of the roof is made of pine; he carries inside the home to become the ceiling.

Four pods - two wings with two pods each, one on the other - are connected by an internal bridge, creating a form of dog bone, said Collins. One of the pods is the living room, dining room and kitchen combined areas; it opens to an expansive decking area. Other pods are areas of private room.

wanting to maximize the outdoor space, Collins avoided by using columns on the decking area. Instead, he designed this steel beam system to support the roof cantilevered and allow windows to extend all the way to the ceiling.
