Houzz Tour: Victorian house with a basement conversion in Bayswater - Living in a Victorian three-storey house and renting the basement flat logical when these owners were just a couple. But as they embarked on family life, the idea of recovering the basement space to create a large house hold, and before they knew it they had not sought help from the architect Felix von Bechtolsheim and designer Clare Gaskin inside to merge the properties and extend to the back, too.
Because the family had been living in the main house, Clare was a lot of existing furniture to work with and wanted to design the space to reflect the personality of the couple and their love of travel and the arts. "I enjoyed using their products - it gave me a starting block," Clare said.
The designer and architect gave the back of the house a different feel to the front. "We wanted light and contemporary, Clare said," particularly to bring daylight into the basement. They went to a large glass wall covering floors lower and upper floor, and the creation of the spacious feel the couple had desired.

The carpentry was designed by Clare announced. There are four different libraries in the room, all very similar, but with slightly varying depths. "They all have different objectives within -some have internal suspension for hanging files, others have shelves, she said. "We wanted to keep the symmetry of the bay window, and the couple of storage required for their paperwork."
Clare painted woodwork a slightly darker shade than the walls to define libraries and bring out that characteristics . "His style echoes a traditional style in terms of groove on the ends. I wanted it more like a period piece where the joinery is darker, "she says. While the space is indeed very convenient, it also needs to be "a little adult and impressive" as all drinks with friends would probably be held here.

Clare has worked closely with the architect and friend Felix von Bechtolsheim in the design of the lower floor. "It was a discussion on how to balance and compensate for the different elements," she says. "We wanted to let in as much light as possible without it being just a large glass wall."

I wanted for them not to have an all white kitchen, "Clare said. "I wanted to use the walnut to warm it and give it a bit of character, but drown everything can be quite heavy." A mix between the two proved the perfect compromise. The aesthetic is elegant and light, but well balanced by the island heavier. It is all about contrast. "The flat, smooth texture units with the natural grain of the wood gives the space a personality that suits those clients, she said

just beyond the kitchen is the family room. Storage is the key here to enable stowed away toys so it could also be used by parents. "They wanted it to be fun, and work for both parents and children," says Clare. "I wanted it to be fun, but not specifically kiddy, because I did not lock the space in their ages at the moment."

up two flights of stairs is the master bedroom with bathroom, a guest bedroom and another bathroom. The couple wanted to create a walk-in closet space in the master bedroom, which was a challenge given the proportions of the room.
Clare and Felix designed and constructed with a partition wall hanging space on the other side. There was some apprehension on the establishment of the dividing wall, as it could block some of the light, but it was the only way to give the couple the storage they wanted and in the end, he has worked. "You should not look at the clothes, and you do not need large bulky doors, which would have been too much space," Clare said.

in the guest room on the same floor as the master bedroom, the couple wanted something very practice that was both a little fun and not too specific. "It's a very small space and, because of the structure of the piece, there was a natural space where we installed shelves, which doubles as a bedside table, too, 'said Clare. "We just wanted to add a little color without spending too much time or money on space," she adds.

Clare realized the room would be seen frequently, the door would not stay closed all the time, so she wanted to do something bold. "It's like you have a bit of artwork on the wall, she said. "I was watching a wallpaper with more color, but thought it would be a bit much. I love this monochromatic print.
