Houzz Tour: An award-winning Island Home in the Inner Hebrides - Tiree, western island in the Inner Hebrides, has a special hold on the heart of the architect Murray Kerr. "I came here when I was three months, he said. "My family has spent summer vacations here for nearly four decades. So it was natural that when Murray's parents, Dave and Liz, bought a dilapidated cottage on the island, Murray should design the renovation. Not that he was the first choice for the job, mind you. "My parents had employed another architect, but , it was enough to send some wild proposals for the new house," said Murray. "I understand my tastes better parents and knew the island, so they finally let me conceive. Also, my mother had trouble saying no to another architect, but she had no problem saying no to me!
The first structural surveys revealed how the cabin was wrecked. "He was going to fall," said Murray, "but as it is registered, we had to get permission from Historic Scotland to demolish and rebuild. "The Murray plans involved rebuilding the original cabin and adding a modern wing and a rear utility room house. It took a year, but in the end, nice ideas for the property Murray won by. "I felt t he construction should reflect the location of the pallet and all buildings on the island, not just the domestic dwellings," says Murray. The house had to be linked with the architecture of the island as a whole. " This is why the rear dwelling reminds farm buildings that pepper the island and shelter his prized cattle from the weather.
It took 21 months of work on site to complete the project. "There are no building materials on Tiree," says Murray, "so everything had to be shipped over. Once completed, the final task was to rename the property. 'It was called Brandon Cottage before my father felt was a bit twee,' laughs Murray. "He worked there was number 6, somewhere else on the island, so he settled simply call House Number 7".

family life is centered on contemporary structure at the rear of the property. The exterior of this building is made of galvanized steel and corrugated fiber cement, with a curved roof profile. "The island is very exposed, said Murray," so a e materials and details had to be very robust. "
The upper level houses a large kitchen, living and dining room, while Dave and Liz's room and room bathroom are below, semi-submerged. "The windows are at waist height, said Murray. 'That meant we could have a two-story building without it overshadow the cottage.

unlike the strong feeling slightly heavy from the outside, inside the dwelling house is light and airy. Tiree boasts long hours of daylight and plenty of sunshine in the summer months, so many windows have been installed to make the most of it, but they were placed at different heights to avoid overlooking a nearest neighbor.

the sheltered garden is located at the rear of the property. Tiree is flat and treeless, with an almost constant breeze blowing, making the island a magnet for windsurfers, but presenting challenges for a location near the beach. 'The w ind moves the sand around, said Murray. "When we saw the house on the side of the prevailing wind had blown sand 3ft against it." Murray had dug the sand to create a sheltered garden.
