Houzz Tour: A 17th century castle is beautifully updated - While exploring the Scottish Highlands in the 190s, a family of four came across the neglected Dalcross Castle. Captivated by the building and its history, they bought it in 1996. The castle was built in 1620 to a daughter of the 8th Lord Lovat, Chief of the Clan Fraser. It was used by the Duke of Cumberland during the rally the troops for the Battle of Culloden in 1746, and the troops have stayed in the castle or cross on their way to the battlefield. A couple of years after purchase, the family decided to enlist the help of Maxwell & Company Architects and Rona Douglas Interiors. "Customers wanted to convert the property to a cold, damp castle unloved in something warm, comfortable and habitable, which could be used by family and friends," recalls James Maxwell. The skillful and sensitive renovation brought comfort 21st century while retaining the character and history of the building, creating a welcoming Scottish escape for the family of their busy lives in London.
