Houzz Tour: A Clever New Build Modeled after a Georgian townhouse Late John Dyer - Grimes was forced to find an unusual solution, but elegant, when the authorities refused permission for a contemporary family house in a conservation area. The plot - in a residential street in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey - home to an ugly concrete abandoned property. The problem? Inside was a historic Anderson bomb shelter board and heritage of the local society were keen to preserve.

"The owners were devastated, convinced that they had wasted their money on land they never be allowed to build, said John. So he tried a very different approach. "The houses on the date of the streets since the early 1800s, so rather than trying to contemporary design, we decided to build an exact replica of the three storey townhouse in historic side," he says . "the idea was that it would be in the local vernacular and therefore much more difficult for authorities to refuse. It is a very unusual approach, but it was the only way we could get a new house built.

The John gamble paid off and he was finally able to meet its customers' short for a fabulous family home. "it was a very interesting project, and very different from what we originally envisioned, said -it, but it turned out beautifully.
