Houzz Tour: A London Fields full of character and renovation Light Hackney - This house was in poor condition when the owners asked for help from the architect Brian O'Tuama. They wanted a complete makeover without the hassle of obtaining permission for planning, so the challenge was to extend and improve within the permitted development guidelines.
"The owners wanted an eclectic feel to the home that reflects their personalities, so we decided to introduce a lot of pattern and texture," says Brian. "The main challenge we face is to open the house to light as much as possible, while at the same time making the workflow space more efficiently."
To solve the problem of light, Brian extended a window existing and added a single pane of glass on the new extension of modest size - a feature the owners were determined to run with spite need a crane to hoist into position. "The owners are both very creative, so when they approached us, they had a lot of ideas, which was wonderful, Brian said.
The finished house has been transformed into a sunny family home that is bathed in natural light and personality bursting.

Brian wanted the kitchen to combine the lightness of a modern regime with eclectic and heritage elements to give plenty of character space. "We deliberately restricted the kitchen units to a wall for the rest of the free space for pictures of the family had gathered," he says. Brian took care to restore original features such as cornices, with sensitivity. "The family was very eager to keep these items in the house, and we were careful to ensure that the space is not too new and false air, he said. "It was a gentle restoration and we kept smooth edges.

This bathroom on the third floor was originally a bedroom. The owners liked the eccentric fireplace, therefore decided to keep the space reconfigured to add character to the crisp, white regime.
