Houzz Tour: A contemporary house on a Wisconsin Farm labor - When it came to designing a modern house for a second Chicago area family, architect Bill Bickford looked an old barn on a farm in Wisconsin. The farm has been in the family for over 25 years, and they had forged a strong connection to the property. "When you look around, you see beautiful old oak trees, barns and silos that dot the landscape, he said. Bickford has designed a home that is both contemporary and technologically advanced, and also consistent with the rural context and family desire for the great outdoors, family gatherings and relaxing weekends.

t old barn near the top of a hill, had a terrible state of disrepair; they had carefully demolished so they can reuse the materials in the future. Bickford, northworks of architects and urban planners new house located just above where the old barn had stood, incorporating the remains of its limestone foundation walls around the pool. Meanwhile, the family intends to use as much of the old structure as possible for future projects and in some of their furniture.
Siting the house at the top of a hill, just above where the old barn means it enjoys spectacular views of the beautiful landscape. Because of the North face orientation, the house becomes a great natural light.
The proportions of the new house are very similar to that of the old barn. The imprint, including the large veranda facing north shown here, is quite generous. The materials mimic those barns in the surrounding countryside, with red cedar wood paneling and a tinned copper roof that will develop a patina over time.

the inside the house is connected to the outside so beyond views. For example, the large fireplace is designed from local limestone, as was the foundation of the original barn. The home is two-sided; the other side serves the general function of wall outside of the house. Doors on either side of slide in hidden recesses by the atmospheric fireplace, inviting in the summer breezes.
The rate of support beams is the same from inside to out, but they change Douglas fir inside the stainless steel on the outside. "Customers wanted this house as close as possible without maintenance," says Bickford. Stainless steel, red cedar wood facade and metal roof require little maintenance and last a long time.

site has a natural slope, but Bickford . smartly designed on the lower floor to be open on all sides "There is no ventilation in this way, the lower floor can be completely open and airy," he said it also meant that. it could just unsightly items such as electricity meters out of sight below

wood and metal mixture through the interior of the house, as the rest of the farm. In the kitchen, a large stainless steel sheet provides a backsplash behind the beach. simple bar stools provide perches for many friends to gather around the large kitchen island.

Two large ceiling fans provide plenty of fresh air. The house is powered by a solar array to the southwest of the house. The panels produce energy to power the equipment of the house and the pool and send power remains back to the grid.
The construction is wood frame with structural integrated panels (SIPs) on the roof. rustic construction of the original beam barn roof inspired by the structural system, but new farms have a contemporary look and cleaner. The wood for the ceilings, beams and frames is Douglas fir with a clear coat.

owners found the large panel to a recovery place (look carefully at the upper right of this photo and see the other half). The halves of the blade along sign barn door tracks and serve not only as art but as the doors between the deck and the master bedroom.

t one of the more contemporary elements of the house is the staircase, but he nods again at agricultural architectural vocabulary. Stairs are laminated wood and cantilever out of a bolted bracket through a wood stringer beam. The metal handrail brings back the feeling of traditional farm; its gates have been inspired by the kind of fencing can be seen around a pig pen.

the top floor contains the master bedroom and the loft area home office. A rug cowhide patchwork is modern and refers to a dairy farm, and plays on the gates to the gates.
