Houzz Tour: A Washington Barn Gets a Modern Makeover rustic barn - This 1970 farm in Whidbey Island in Washington state had become obsolete and had fallen out of use, but its owner loved his charm. Rather than dropping it, she brought him back to life, save a lot of its original materials to create a comfortable guest house for his children and grandchildren, also used as a work space for groups local community it belongs.
Architects Thomas Schaer and Prentiss Hale brought a little cottage owner in the new style guesthouse in the mixture of old and new textures modern lines in his classic mansard roof.

Schaer and Hale have divided the barn into two distinct areas: an apartment in the private floor with a separate entrance, and the downstairs kitchen, home office and guest house in the old structure of the canopy. The bottom workspace now hosts local events.

A spacious kitchen in the downstairs unit can easily accommodate guests and large groups. The client wanted a sustainable open space where she and others could work with produce from the garden, make cheese or concoct group dinners.
Such a worker must have space, durable materials unfussy. The custom concrete counter and stainless steel base of the island fit the bill. After pouring the counter, Schaer pushed a mixing bowl in the wet concrete to an integrated recess for fruits and vegetables.

the kitchen opens to a large dining room that is equally well suited for large groups. The plywood table and benches for sustainable food can be moved outside in front of a sliding glass door and right onto the terrace for al fresco dining.

the furniture in and around the dining room was chosen with a theme to the modern mind, but matter-of-fact. Linens, cowhide and raw wood textures blend into the neutral palette.
The owner wanted texture on the walls, so Schaer used a layer of plaster as the final finish on the drywall, skip the paint and put the coffee grounds in the veneer plaster create spots and streaks.

The mansard roof now has a slight gentle slope, recovery by the simple and graceful furnishings. The guest bedroom upstairs embrace the light as much as the bottom. Expand windows and replacement of the dome to the floor brought more natural light.

a small kitchen complete the guest room area with separate floor. The initial concept was to design a separate apartment that could house a score to date.

a loft bathroom and bedroom are perfect for one or two. The cozy sloping ceilings and wooden planks of cedar are recovered hot for sleeping and bathing spa area. Schaer and Hale used a roll-top bath recovered, put in a gray plaster deck for an integrated look.

the original barn was a garage with a canopy attached to the vehicles and farm equipment. Built in the 1970s, he has not had a wooden frame, as the old barns, so that architects should not make structural changes. The footprint of the barn remained exactly the same.
