Houzz Tour: A newly built house in a Devon Jolie Ville - As the saying goes, find the perfect property is all about Location, location, location. So when Eilir Sheryn and Frederieke Ellen van were looking for a family home in Devon, they took very seriously looking for the perfect place. "We lived in London, but we wanted to go southwest, Sheryn said," so we spent a year driving around Devon every weekend looking for our perfect city.
This dedication paid when they discovered the beautiful city of Ashburton. Situated in the Dartmoor National Park, it is, according to Sheryn, "like a big village and a small town at the same time," and he ticked more boxes on the family's wish list. With the location sorted, it was time to start a new search - this time for the perfect home.

This was not a rash decision, if: the family lived in the 05-2013 bungalow while they planned the new building, and they took the time to really get to know the region and to work on plans for a replacement building which was sympathetic to the location.
In January 2013, they moved to a rented dwelling and demolition of the old bungalow and construction of the new house began.

a wood stove is on a low shelf in the main living area. "Thanks to the underfloor heating in this room, we should not rely on the stove for heat," says Sheryn, 'but it is a visual feature and very cozy on a winter day. "

a green grass steel, wood and glass staircase offers a bold reception in the main hall. "We wanted to have something sculptural in the main hall, says Sheryn. "We wanted it to be transparent and almost hollow, because there is a large south-facing window directly above the first floor, and it was logical to bring light from there in the hallway.

"We designed the stairs ourselves and people love or hate, says the architect. "Because we could go directly to the manufacturer for the materials and had done locally, we were lucky that we could get a fraction of what you might pay for a custom staircase.

most of the first floor windows extend to ground level - another carefully considered decision by the couple. "Having the vertical windows like this allows better viewing angle down into the garden below," says Sheryn.

"We always wanted a contemporary building, says Sheryn, but the couple was eager to do the work of the structure for everyone.
"Although this is a two-story building, we designed a flat roof for two floors without a large sloping roof. As such, we were able to reduce the height of the structure and preserve the views of our neighbors. "

as its name suggests, Hidden House is largely shielded from the road by a high wall enclosure. The driveway offers a tantalizing glimpse of the building beyond.
"In many ways, the garden has helped, says Sheryn" as the great acts of enclosure wall as a screen and obscures the house from the main road. That's why we renamed hidden house '.

dressed in a mixture of brick, zinc panels and colored blocks to make paint, outside the building looks like a Mondrian painting.
Each element has been carefully thought out. The bricks were shipped at a factory near the birthplace of Ellen van in the Netherlands. "Dutch bricks are thinner than the British," says Sheryn, 'and a bit more elegant and elongated. White paint was a deliberate move to create a Scandinavian atmosphere.

as a visual contrast to the texture element handmade bricks, Sheryn chose to take the rest of zinc panels building. 'I liked the slightly machined nature of zinc as a contrast, "he says. 'It is coated with a brown finish and acts as a vertical contrast to the horizontal masonry.
Zinc also creates a sculptural 3D effect because of the way it surrounds the corners and stays away from the masonry. "It leads your eye into corners, he said.
The building has 20 solar panels hidden on the roof, too, which generate most of the electricity in the house. "A flat roof is idea for solar panels because they are largely hidden from view and may be inclined to take the sun, unlike on a sloping roof, where the angle is fixed and they are usually much more visible, "says Sheryn.
