Houzz Tour: A one bedroom apartment is given a Creative Boost on a budget - Being able to walk to work is my favorite thing, says interior designer Bachman Brown Clem. Sacrifice a little space and having to be frugal really was the compromise to be able to live in the West Village of New York. When Clem bought this apartment a bedroom, which is a few steps from great restaurants, shops and bars and surrounded by beautiful architecture, it was short of renovation and decoration money but long on ingenuity and creativity.
The combination of the hand-me-down, a large eBay and second-hand finds, items of its customers are no longer interested, the skills of true craftsmen, he works with and even repurposed wok, it transforms his apartment into a stylish and comfortable home for two.

windows, which retain their original moldings fabulous, are one of the best features the apartment, leaving plenty of light and offering a magnificent view of the emblematic district of New York. In the decoration of his house, interior designer Bachman Brown Clem used minimalist soft Roman shades to accentuate the original windows. He says they are rarely driven down even further because he likes to enjoy the light and views to the maximum.
Clem is used to transform nothing into something and definitely put this skill to use at home. His apartment was used as design laboratory for him for 12 years now. This cabinet was an auction to find it was in a toy box for a child's room in a house show. He had painted in the deep blue and added red handles. When he decided to take home after he painted the black handles to give it a more adult look.

"This apartment was a labor of love," said Clem, who transformed his bit home by little over the years, repair plastering, tiling, painting, adding layers of lighting and more. Although the lounge is very chic, almost everything was cheap (except Warhol lithograph on the couch, which is long-term loan from the collection of an art parent). There was such great moldings around windows, but all that was on the ceiling had been removed, "said Clem. He installed the ceiling itself ornamentation - it is made from plastic foam.

The coffee table base is by Milo Baughman and was a gift from a client that no longer used for this. "Originally there was a gigantic glass tray and the small apartment could not take it, Clem said.
Instead, another guest was given a rest of marble from a kitchen project they were working together. The mat is an inexpensive African woven mat, which adds texture underfoot and helps to define the seating area.

the upholstery on the chairs vintage is also a gift, but he taught a valuable lesson Clem in the choice of fabric. "I was at my upholsterer and he told me that I could choose from the remains of the stuff he had in the back. When I saw this cashmere I thought it would be wonderful, "he said. But when it is so soft and comfortable in winter, you can not sit on it during the summer - your legs start to sweat immediately
The vast turquoise ceramic Bitossi lamp is something Clem has had for years. Its scale is a surprise and works well with small side table Saarinen Tulip. It also provides a great reading light - in the months when the fabric of the chair is not too hot, anyway!

regarding the organization of books, there is a great experience for Clem. He and his partner combined their collection when he moved, and because the two often take down books to enjoy and for reference, there is no real rhyme or reason for the arrangement - it just happened organically. "We try to keep all first editions together and that's about it for the organization," says Clem.
To put illustration on the shelves, it advises the assembly and testing of the scale - you do not want art to overwhelm the shelves as a whole, but you do not want a piece so small that it is lost. Finding the right balance is simply a matter of trial and error. It just developed portrait. Clem also hidden in the post-World War 2 West German pottery, it collects among the books. The interesting shapes and colors give the eye a place to rest.

We took just a glance of this corner in the first shot - there is a small peninsula the right which is the edge of the small galley kitchen. Clem reupholstered vintage stool in print as seen on cushions in the living room.
'I love bar carts, "said Clem. But punch bowls are my favorite. 'This midcentury carriage by Poul Hundevad has plenty of room for spirits, cocktail mixing equipment and additional lenses. The punch bowl provides a place to store oranges and limes for cocktails.
'I like to mix. I do not believe in style, "says Clem. The trolley is a good study of the designer throws seamlessly together different styles and periods, with traditional artifacts and art deco looking at home on the small piece of midcentury.

in the bedroom, Clem chose pearls dotted fabric by Hable Construction for the headboard to keep the geometric theme. A mural gallery head is a mixture of different media. Clem favorite piece is a portrait washed in pink, made by his brother, a professional artist. The work contains a quote from a former Vanity Fair article that both crack up. "It's very sentimental, he said.

Not too sentimental to change, though - it was a lesson in pickling and finishing for the couple. They got so far, and have since sending a professional to complete the job.
