And that's exactly the approach designer Veronica Lucey took in 2013 the one-year project to update the Victorian half she and her family had lived for two decades.

Victorian houses tend to be long and thin and can be very dark. "She also wanted to create more space for her teenage children, and achieve both goals, it came with a few tricks of ingenious design.

With major changes, including a new sub- floor loft and a clever expansion, it changed the direction of a new staircase to create the illusion of a larger house, situated high, internal double doors to create a sense of grandeur and space, internal windows added glass and mirror, plus fitted kitchen to suggest the room is much larger than it really is. "It's like living in a different house, said Veronica.
