Houzz Tour: At Home With ... Caroline Rowland Patchwork Harmony - It is always wise to keep an open mind when house-hunting, which was exactly how writer and editor iconographer Caroline Rowland was able to spot the potential in this two bed maisonette in Kingston Upon Thames, though it was not in his initial search area. "We used to live in East London and really wanted to stay close to the city," she says. But when she saw the house with her husband, they realized it suited their future plans much better. The apartment needed a complete aesthetic overhaul, but thankfully, Caroline could see before the interior bright color and spot the potential of the property.
Six years later, the space is a bright, cheerful and welcoming family home for her, her husband and their daughter of 14 months. Thank you for their hard work and natural flair for design, e room very packaged character vintage charm and creative ideas . Try to see how they have transformed the interior.

what you start blogging?
I started blogging there nearly seven years when I was still working full-time for a newspaper. My work as a picture editor was relatively creative, but I really wanted to explore my interest in interiors, and a blog is an easy way to do it. I've never looked back and I am independent in early 2013. I credit everything I've done over the past seven years with this decision to start blogging.

how long have you lived here and how you and your meeting is flat?
We bought this apartment there nearly six years. This was our first venture on the property ladder, so it was an important decision, yet very exciting.
We used to live in East London and really wanted to stay close to the city, conveniently close to a Metro station, but when we got to see houses in Kingston Upon Thames we realized that it suited our future plans much better. This place seemed so much bigger than anything we looked and we loved the character he had, so we were so happy to finally move.

What was the place as when you bought it?
he was in good condition, but it was completely redecorate. The color palette was a real shift - yellow in the hallway, dark red in the room, pale purple in the living room ... We wanted everything to be light and bright, so we painted most cleanrooms, although our room Pale Cirrus by Fired Earth.
Originally, the kitchen and the dining room were separate rooms; the kitchen was quite small and a little dark, and we never really knew what to do with the dining room - it felt like a bit of a nothing room. Thus, last year, we released a wall and made the kitchen and dining room in a large space.

What is your proudest DIY?
Well, I guess it's not so much mine as my husband, with the help of some family members. When we made our kitchen renovation, we originally planned to have a copper worktop on the island, but various things have happened and it did not work. Our manufacturer has abandoned us, leaving us with a plywood work surface (which should have been coated with copper).
We decided to work on a different solution and considered concrete for a while. Ultimately, however, we needed to make the budget friendly as possible, so we just laying wooden planks, we stained, side by side, then lined with copper strips. It was a big job altogether, but I think it turned out well, and it did not cost too much more we managed to get a copper number in there.

What is your favorite place in the apartment, and why?
I'm loving our new kitchen-dining room. It still feels pretty new, and since the wall was removed is such a light space. My favorite time of day is the first thing in the morning, breakfast with my husband and my daughter. It is a nice friendly space.

what makes you most happy at home?
I wish I had ordered and everywhere looking beautiful, but it's hard to be a working mom. We begin to feel a little cramped in the house now, and storage is an issue, so I feel like I'm constantly storage. But the times when it is clean and tidy when there are fresh flowers in every room and a beautiful scented candle burning on the mantelpiece, then I can finally sit on the couch and relax.

? What is your next big decorating project
We actually just finished the apartment - the bathroom was the last room we needed to decorate. As I mentioned, since our daughter arrived last year, we feel like we need more space, so we expect to sell later this year and hopefully get a bigger place. So I guess this will be my next big decorating project!

do you have a design rule that you live by?
My rule is "no rules"! My style and preferences are also changing, so it would be stupid to be restrictive on what I can do in my house.

What do you think is the next big trend interiors and why?
Well, it seems the Scandinavian aesthetic is becoming increasingly popular and it's a look I'm leaning towards a lot myself. It is a sober manner and living expenses. I'm personally struggling for a less complicated life, and this style seems to offer it.

what is the first thing you do when you get up in the morning?
Our baby is only 14 months, so for the moment, my husband and I take turns getting its place in the morning. She wakes up early enough (usually 5:00 to 6:00!) So it is good that we both get an extra 10 minutes in bed every day. Then we give them breakfast and have ours together, then it usually gets a bit frantic as we all try to prepare for the day!

What is your favorite city or country and why?
This is difficult, as I have been to so many beautiful places. The only country I am impatient to see is Croatia. We had a great two weeks a few years ago and always said we would return. It is a beautiful country that seems still untouched by mass tourism.

How do you spend Sunday afternoon?
at the time, I'm usually trying to do the job, because I do not get much time during the week with the search for my daughter. But, ideally, a good lunch with the family and a meander around the shops is always nice.

What is your key to a healthy and happy life?
I'm not sure I can really preach healthy! I really need to eat better and exercise more myself. But as far as happy is concerned, my motto is "do what you like." If you work for an employer or for yourself, make sure you like it, and if you do not, do something.
It took me five years of hard work - blogging and setting up later 91 Magazine in my evenings and weekends - but ultimately it meant I could give up my day job and follow my dream. I am so much happier now, to learn to do what I love every day.
