Houzz Tour: At Home With ... Karen Knox Making Spaces - When Karen Knox and his now fiance, Pete, moved into this house in the 1960s combined with Leeds, it was structurally OK, but desperately need a makeover. Karen was pregnant while they were house-hunting, so there was an additional time pressure on the process, meaning they could not be too demanding, and to begin with, it has not been fully sold on the property. "It took me ages to fall in love with this place, she said," even though I knew I would like once we started working on it. "
After a kitchen and bathroom major revision, and a little time and care spent on other rooms, the couple has a house adapted to the needs and style of their families." The bones building now working for our family of three, said Karen. "It is a small but perfectly formed family home that has been reconfigured, twisted, updated, redesigned and restyled much. We love it."

What must -we know about your blog?
is like my work diary, a place where I present new design projects - share the process and complete shows - show my own home and how it is evolving, and post my favorite finds both new and vintage ... the ups and downs of working in design really.
Making Spaces focuses on feasible design for real people living in real houses with realistic budgets. I'm a big and very cynical north, so as to bring things on earth. Pretentious is not something I tolerate.
Walls painted white Nutmeg, Dulux. Sofa, Heal. coffee tables; skull cushion while Made.com. Lamppost, BHS. Carpet i2k.

what you start blogging?
I wanted an outlet for all the ramblings based on the plan in my head. I have so many ideas, too much sometimes, so writing them in blog posts bites, it's like I collate all the best.
I'm ridiculously passionate about spreading the love good design. I think really good home design can change the way we live and improve our lifestyle.

how long have you lived here and how did you and your home meet?
We've been here three and a half years now. We were looking to buy when I was six months pregnant, so we did not have much time for messing around.
Ideally, we wanted a greater doer, but the reality was, we would not have time to prepare the house before breakfast arrived. We bought this house, mainly for the region and what it has offered in terms of schools, networks and environment.
This house was halfway between being made and require complete renovation. The rooms really need to rip and re were the big money spaces -. The bathroom and kitchen

What was the house like when you moved into first?
For the first year we were here, so was not me at all. I had moved into a three-bedroom house with an open ground floor plan. The house had three separate bedrooms, and the kitchen was both tiny and dark. The window overlooking an alley with a brick wall and backsplash was ill-posed black tiles. It was a depressing space to be. It did not work function-wise and had the dubious wiring, bits fall and broken appliances.
When we bought the house, we knew the food would be torn and overthrown by the dining room, but we had to wait and save. The bathroom, however, could not wait. It just all had to go. So it was done during our first summer here. After six months, we have approached the kitchen. It was hard with a one-year-old in tow, but it is worth it. It was then the house has really become ours.

What is your favorite place in the house and why?
It depends on what mood I am, I suppose. It is normally the room that I did recently. But I would say that the kitchen is where we spend most of our time as a family. It is the room that we worked harder and, while there are still bits that I would change, I'm really proud of this space.

what makes you most happy at home?
I am a real homebird, to be at home generally makes me very happy. If I could get away with staying in, I'd do that one day. Having friends around food and drink and having the house full of music and laughter is also very good, and always does better when the sun shines, so we can throw open the doors and sit in the garden. I can not wait for summer this year.
I also get a weird kick out of hearing the washing machine and dishwasher are at the same time. Do not ask me why!

What is your next big decorating project?
In addition to the five design projects I run now? I would say that our room needs a little updating. I wanted to add wallpaper, update the blinds and get rid of the carpet. However, I have to get Pete's green light before I could go to things like that because, a) it must pay 50%, and b) it will need to adapt effectively to new stores and lay the floor.

What is your proudest DIY?
I'd probably say the chimney breast wall of the dining room is still my favorite DIY project. I painted the entire cleanroom, two days after the move. A pot of white paint covered everything including the wallpapered fireplace. The next day, when it had dried, you could still see the raised design wallpaper coming through.
So a bit back to front, we then stripped off as wallpaper, and I liked what was left behind. I had to convince Pete to leave everything in distress, and my father thought I was joking ... people kept asking when we were going to end up, but I like it.

you a design rule that you live by
When you select a wall color, choose the shade on the color band you want, then a move down - darker. Painting has always lighter air once it is on the wall. Color is your friend. It is also the most cost effective way to update your space. But do not skimp on the testers - have you seen how much gray there

what is the first thing you do when you get up in the morning?
As 99% of the population, I check my phone. Horrible habit, even if I did not the night of room and I sleep much better since I made this little change. So I guess the first thing I do is pick up my phone!
What would you like want to do on Sunday afternoon?
Potter. Pottering is the best. In fact, tinkering in PCs is the best. I do like one day a week where we are not clothed. The three of us laze in PJs, watching 1960s Batman origin and eating toast. Sure, I'll probably do some things work, but I'm trying so hard to switch off at least one day a week.

What do you think is the next big trend of domestic and why?
it is difficult to predict things like that. There is a real attraction at the moment between the maximalist and minimalist design; Clean lines by Eclectic report; Pantone color of the year and light pastels from the Abigail Ahern style turning to the dark side.
Botany and metallics have been with us for a while now and I do not go away anytime soon. It is a really fun time for conception now in fact, as it is equally accessible - you can pick up pieces 'on trend' everywhere

do you have a mantra that you live by
I have some mantras; they are scattered around the house to remind me what is important. Take in moments, not wanting time away and not to run so fast you miss all the small, precious memories that make up the "life."
Did you could not live without?
My fiance, Pete, and our son, Charlie. They are my air. I would not be me, I am now without both. I am extremely lucky.
Concrete tile effect , Villeroy & Boch.
