Houzz Tour: A Century Cottage 18 Gets an extension Graceful - When Rory and Becky Hart bought their first home together five years ago, they knew he was destined to be a labor of 'love. "He was in a pretty awful state," recalls Rory. "The first floor joists had rotted and there was a series of extensions built on the wrong side. He needed a complete overhaul.

As a builder and designer craft, Rory saw the potential to transform the hodgepodge of bad DIY jobs in a spacious family home, but despite his enthusiasm, the renovation was all but simple. Limited funds and three attempts of building permits meant the family spent a year living in the tight down while they were doing renovations to the original cottage at night and on weekends to fit with the full-time work Rory.

'We expected a much more contemporary extension when we first applied for a building permit, but was constantly pushed by the planners, "says Rory. "They were afraid that it was not in harmony with the rest of the village, so in the meantime we have done this work as we could to the original structure.

The planning restrictions eventually led Rory and Becky to settle on a more conservative extension, who decorated their own unique blend of classic and contemporary style. "We actually have a very different taste when it comes to the interior," says Rory. "I'm a little more avant-garde, while Becky prefer a more classical approach country-style, but after four years of effort, we came to the end!
