Houzz Tour: a newly built house overlooking Bristol - With a property in such a prime location - on top of a hill overlooking the city center of Bristol - architect Tom Russell knew that worth taking the time to work out the best way to develop the site. He and his family of four lived in the property, a house in 1870 for 18 months, then decide to demolish and build a new one, or trying to renovate it. "We wanted to gradually feel our way and discover the lie of the land, he said. "It is an extraordinary site with spectacular views and we wanted to do things." Tom decided to retain most of the old cottage, just demolish an extension, and build a new house adjacent to the property. The house itself is still awaiting renovation.

One of the main challenges of building was to negotiate access. "Because it's in an urban area and behind high walls, there was no vehicle access and we ended up having to take down a portion of the boundary wall, 'said Tom. the negotiation of planning was also difficult, as Tom wanted to be careful not to restrict the views of all the neighboring properties.

"The key ambitions of the project were to make the most of the site, views and orientation, and create something that was energy efficient," says the architect. Each bedroom and living space was designed to look at the view, while all functional areas are on the north side of the building.
