Houzz Tour: Modern Industrial Antique meeting in a Ingenious Home - Kelly Gonzalez is a contractor, an interior designer and a mother of four who like to solve problems and make sure everyone is happy. But when she began to build her own house, she faced some obstacles. These included a narrow piece of land on a steep slope, an oak tree living in the middle of the property, a stream without promise to come embankment, construction of regulations on the size of the house, and the needs of school home children and work from-home husband. Oh, and she was pregnant.
The good news is, she and the team of his company, Silverthorn Contracting and Design, has pulled it off. And there was one thing his brief that it has failed to integrate: an inner rail. "Once the walls were in place, she said," just the parts did not match. "She did not despair, however. The slide fitted in the garden, and the space allocated within equipped with an extra large pantry -. The problem is solved, and everyone is happy

The area that Kelly Gonzalez bought was very established and there were not many current courses. She found one of the few remaining. "One of the main reasons why he was there, she said, was because there were so many problems." Gonzalez called Carina Coel Restructure of Studio to help design around issues, and converted Coel restrictions into opportunities. Building permits only took nine months to be approved, but now the unobtrusive design integrates perfectly into its environment, and on the back of the house extends outward to meet all the needs of the Gonzalez family.

the house progresses downward sloping lot, which increases in size as it goes. It is pressed around the oak tree in the middle, and a deck wraps around the tree, making it the centerpiece of the design. A side garden offers space for the game, and a trail of loose rock works to guide rainwater into the stream. The house is also on pillars sunk 40 feet into the ground, something Coel designed to prevent the house to move because of the gradual erosion or flooding

custom steel windows were built on site and stretch from floor to ceiling. Gonzalez's husband lives by the saying, "The more light, the better, but since moving, they added curtains. "Without them, it is really brilliant, Gonzalez said. Coel designed the windows to serve vertical structural supports, in addition to forming the window frames.

from the bottom of garden, it's easy to get perspective on the slope of the house. The grassy area provides space for children to play, and you can see the output of the rail behind the left edge of the play structure. In this light, you also get an idea of the size of the oak tree which surrounds and rises above the house.

The Plan site describes the difficulties of the design of the house. The large green circle represents the canopy of the oak tree and shows what an obstacle it was round. Coel made room for the shaft and also managed to get approval from the city to move the house near the street and away from the river. Most of the year the river is only a foot deep, and it is possible to pass through the water on the other side of the plot. For security, Gonzalez has erected a fence on the side of the garden house.

It took nine months for planning to get approved, which was a blessing in disguise. Gonzalez and her husband have spent the time to find things for the home, such as reclaimed doors, appliances, freestanding bath and a piece of wood from the bottom of the Colorado River.

At the intersection of the hallway and two flights of stairs, the main floor covering elements meet. The entrance to the house is on a concrete slab, then there are steps down to a cantilever foundation with wooden floors finished with a gray spot. The stairs are pine, stained a dark ebony.

a cloakroom is tucked under the stairs and to the left is the study. Doors, both recovered Gonzalez were among the conclusions pending planning permission. Coel designed openings to fit the doors; having doors on site is easy customization

study is at the front of the house, away from the home-school activities. Gonzalez's husband works at home, and here it is quiet enough for its conference calls. The great work of art is a piece by artist Dolan Geiman Midwest, and, with the otherwise empty walls of the house, it works as a dominant design element

In the kitchen, white is right. The counter is made of Carrara marble; cabinets are white and light gray; and a white chandelier hangs over the island. Backsplash and hood are Greenboard painted with an eggshell finish, Gonzalez and certify that the projections can quickly and easily be scratched. The shelves are recovered wood from an old spaghetti warehouse in Austin. The supports are reused by custom steel windows

oak takes all the focus on the bridge. Gonzalez hired an arborist to help preserve the tree, and Coel designed the home to both meet the needs of the tree and highlight it. Downstairs deck and three glass walls facing the trunk, and an upstairs gallery windows overlooking the branches. The decking and part of the foundation of the house is cantilevered, enabling the house to sit on the tree and leaving undisturbed roots. For decking material, Gonzalez chose wood garapa, which works like ipe, but is significantly cheaper. Untreated wood has disappeared coordinate with finishing the interior flooring

The doors open steel as traditional hinged doors (for quick access in and out), but they also fold together to create open access to outdoor spaces. Gonzalez wanted to be able to move the dining table to eat outside if it wanted, and custom accordion doors fulfills this request

throughout the house, Gonzalez used the items recovered. The chandelier is a rewired fixture, and beams, which are structural in nature, are recovered wood. Gonzalez, a water lover's self-proclaimed, also installed a water filter reverse osmosis in the kitchen sink (in addition to a water filter whole house that reduces chlorine, microbial pathogens and other contaminants). "We hardly ever buy bottled water, she said.

"We wanted [the house] to be modern," Gonzalez said, "but to have a vintage industrial feel. "This aesthetic is best seen in the living room, where antique chairs mingle with exposed steel windows and herringbone floor meets the finishing plaster of the chimney.

classic Rumford fireplace pushes the heat in the room and easily warms the living room and kitchen. The steel above the opening is structural, but instead of placing a veneer on top, Gonzalez left exposed, thereby increasing the industrial sense of space. She also wanted a coat with a presence, but that did not leave room for the items placed on top. This piece of wood recovered from the bottom of the Colorado River worked.

The sub- ground came after the fact, mentioned by the husband of Gonzalez. Luckily it was an easy addition. After digging a 8ft section of the embankment, the team built a concrete retaining wall and a staircase to the first floor. The exposed raw room works well for movie nights and as a quiet space that is separated from the first floor.

"I am an only child, "said Gonzalez, and I'm embracing this great family thing. "For now, three of the children sleep in a bedroom oversized (the youngest is still in bed) and Gonzalez said that late night discussions are one of their favorite activities. When shooting the room, Gonzalez planned on sleeping space suspended, and she had the authors construct additional support in the wall. She also added strong cord that connects to a ceiling grid and a scale that also provides structural support. "I threw the rope and jumped on the bed," Gonzalez said, "because you know they will."

in an effort to save wood, Gonzalez installing tongue and groove pine beams bleached measure both the subfloor and finished floor (instead of a plywood subfloor). it stained planks of ebony black to contrast with the stark white walls. Clerestory windows allow the natural light to enter the space, Gonzalez said that during the hours of daylight, children rarely need to turn on a light

"The second floor of a house usually gets neglected," Gonzalez said, "then I wanted do something interesting. "The corridor has worked as one of those spaces of engagement. Instead of leaving a narrow corridor whose sole purpose was to pass between rooms, Coel and Gonzalez have broadened the way to create a reading corner. They also repeated the wooden beams recovered and installed at the bottom shelves of the excess steel window. On the other side of the windows, the upper branches of the oak tree swaying, adding a soothing visual. The seating area, pleasant surprise to Gonzalez, has become one of his favorite places in the house
