Houzz Tour: A Victorian villa in Bath is for family Transformed Living - After a family bought this Victorian villa just outside Bath, they began to wonder whether they had made a huge mistake. The property remained deserted for many years, and a patchwork of extensions of different decades in the back had created a confused aesthetically and structurally questionable building. "It was a real shock," said Christopher Mackenzie, chief architect of the project to restore and renovate the house. "It was a collection of buildings from different eras that were gradually merged.
Mackenzie and his team undertook a major renovation project: from demolition to construction, plumbing plastering, not left to chance. Despite various surprises along the way, like finding not one but two well hidden under the floor, the end result is a bright and spacious home that honors its Victorian past while enjoying the contemporary design.

After counting disjoint extensions myriads who had been nailed to the house over the years, architects have begun digging a large piece of land at the rear of the property, which is on a hill. "The hill used to run straight up the back of the house, and the road leading to the property is steep and you can not park on it," says Mackenzie. "We created this courtyard area to give owners some access if necessary.
There was a great deal of engineering that involved a lot of work piling holding up the hill, but worth doing well. In addition to providing a parking space, the establishment of the court and extension reversed the direction of the house, so that this region, which was originally in the rear of the property is now the main entrance.

"Many people think it is a good idea to have the same surface all the way through when it comes to kitchens and dining rooms, he says, but if you put a floor woods next to the water, it will not look good long time, and if you end up getting water below, you have to lift the entire floor. the change in floor levels was a happy accident that took the decision to change easy materials.

one of the only parts of the house where the original features could be restored is the hallway. "We protected the tiles with hardboard during labor, and it was possible to take all the cables through a different route," says Mackenzie.
"The idea of the renovation was to make the original house, readable and maintain features such as the tile, so that all new insertions are unquestionably contemporary additions , he said. it was all about making honest.

This is how the original house would have looked less the small extension on the left (home cooking today). It was found in a total state of disrepair. "When we started working, there were lots of horrors," recalls Mackenzie. "We found a well in the living room and another in the dining room ...
