Houzz Tour: A New Home Construction This Reimagines Victorian terrace - This newly built three bedroom house in south London is, in many ways, reinvent contemporary domestic space. "It is a midpoint between the Victorian terraced house and everyone loves modernist architect house, said Matthew Wood, the architect behind it. Rather than featuring acres of open space, the house offers a volume and a fluid layout, consisting of a winding sequence of connected areas connected by a staircase dogleg. Cleverly, it eliminates the need for corridors and hallways. "There is no dead space, Matthew said.
One of three houses on this site, all created by Matthew with the developer and architect Roger Zogolovitch of Solidspace, the design house has proved very popular. "It is contemporary and smart without being a big statement, Matthew said. "People might think they want to live in a great modernist white box is completely open plan, but a house like that says a lot about you, and a lot of us are not comfortable with this. We prefer something like this!

the developer, Roger Zogolovitch of Solidspace, worked on the concept of the section house divided for some time. "You will up to half a level so you do not need to go back on yourself as you do in a traditional house," says Matthew. "There is no need for landings. Each floor takes you from one room to another. There is no wasted space.

three houses were built on a site occupied by garages, in a narrow alley. "Planners were very particular about what we could build here," Matthew said. "The houses were to have own gardens and parking off-street, because it is a suburban area.
They also had to engage with the local traditional vernacular. "They were to have brick and pitched roofs," Matthew said.

The developer, Solidspace, had very modern ideas that conflicted with the more traditional demands of planners, but when Matthew came on board, his approach was simply to embrace what planners wanted.
'We said, OK, it's fine. We will adopt these planning restrictions, "he said. "We will use traditional materials such as brick and wood, then add some weird things to satisfy our more directed design aspirations!

A tweak led design that Matthew was able to do was to use thin bricks. "They are 50mm rather than 65mm classic, he said. "They bring a subtle elegance and make the exterior brick walls and inside look a little stronger than if we had used traditional bricks.

Matthew designed a top-line library to a wall in the dining area. "We were going to have a piece of glass, but the impression it would be a bit too bling and not very intimate, he said. "So we thought we could build a wall. That's basically what we did, even if we added shelves on the side dining room. '
This design also creates a simple wall on the upper side of the living room, so that owners can keep a sofa against it. "One of the disadvantages of not having the corridors is not having very many walls to put things against," adds Matthew. "It was a solution and it makes the job of living.

balcony study is flooded with light from the double height space it dominates, but feels anchored by the exposed brick wall. "Once we have adopted the idea of a brick exterior, we felt it was important to be as honest as possible about the construction inside," Matthew said. "The house has a brick wall and the block around the outside. The floors are then seated in a large central structural element, which is the bearing wall in the middle. Any holder wall is made of brick, so why not expose it and be honest about it?

Although conventional brick can not have been the first choice of Matthew to the outside, it is proved very popular. "It was one of the best pieces of feedback we've had about three houses we have built on this site, he said. "People were very comfortable with the field. We thought Masonry was a little too trad - we all try to be the architects of the day! But for people who buy homes, it made them feel comfortable. This is not twee, but it is familiar.
