Houzz Tour: An innovative cottage with stunning - Like many city residents, the architect Jesse Garlick and his wife, Susan Elliott, dreamed of have a little escape from their busy lives in the urban center of Vancouver. So there four years, they started searching for a place to make that happen. They have found their place during a camping trip near BC wine country, about five hours east of Vancouver, after crossing the border into Washington and fall in love with the landscape.
They also liked the price. In this rocky high desert hinterland - 25 miles from the nearest town (Oroville, 1676 population) - were able to pick up 20 acres of rolling hills to £ 20,000. Of course, the remote location meant building a house would be difficult. But Jesse took it as an opportunity to explore the off-grid systems that it hopes to use in the practice of architecture.

And building a compact footprint with two floors rather than something more spread made more efficient heat.

Jesse chose the material for its aesthetics and because it had a practical sense for a home located in an area where fires occur.

He said it takes about six hours for the generator to recharge the batteries, providing enough power for a couple of days, if there is no sun.

The cement patio was the most difficult part of the project Jesse said. The nearest concrete plant is an hour and a half. For 100 degree time, concrete was well heated by the time it arrived. The hot cement and weather were brutal to work with and, and concrete made much faster they wanted it.

Jesse said that, given the dry climate, the humidity is not a concern, the more there is a gap between the 6in bottom of the bed and the bathroom, so the water is never completely stuck under.

Because the walls are solid wood panels, Jesse could not run the plumbing pipes or electrical son through them. Instead, he built a stick framed structure in the heart of the house to run all the mechanicals through. This envelope around the central staircase is covered with plywood stained to match the panels of cross-laminated timber. Light switches, plumbing, heating and other systems are stacked in this structure.

The house is on the edge of the property. Jesse walked the site several times in search of the best place on which to build the house. Ultimately, he chose a mound that was not the highest thing on the landscape, but not the lowest either. 'Going too low and you lose the points of view; go too high and it's like what Frank Lloyd Wright said about if you build on top of a hill, you lose the hill, he said.

All outside steel plates are unfinished and directly from the factory, laser cut on the design template that Jesse has worked with 3D modeling technology. The size of the panels is based on what two guys - Jesse and his brother - could lift and install. "They are 80 pounds, which is the maximum size that we could manhandle up," Jesse said.
It took the brothers about three weeks to set up the outside metal. They also made the interior framing and plywood. Jesse then hired an electrician, a plumber and builder of the cabinet to help with the rest.

This is the plan floor to the project Jesse said they spent £ 10,000 overall for the house - £ 20,000 for the Earth. £ 25,000 for septic systems and solar water; £ 25,000 for the development of the site, including the construction of the dirt road; and around £ 0,000 for materials, labor, crane rental, etc. Jesse saved some money by making her own designs and fight against some of the labor himself.
