Houzz Tour: A Scottish Croft Creatively Transformed for flexible life - It is not an easy task to take on an abandoned croft and turn it into a beautiful home, but when Thelma Archer acquired his property in the Central Highlands of Scotland in 08, she knew who to ask for help. His son, Stuart Archer finished his qualifications to be an architect and worked with her to design a new home. "The main thing for mom was the creation of a generous house with enough space to set up the family and guests, but the house does not feel too massive when she was alone at home, said Stuart.

The croft consists of an abandoned cottage and barn, or steading. This provided Stuart with the inspiration for the new design. The crofts farmers in the Highlands often consist of several dependencies within their borders, "he explains. 'As a firm develops a new addiction is built. This approach seems most appropriate to be here. So instead of creating a single new home, Stuart reconstructed buildings on their original footprint and added a contemporary structure to connect the two areas.
This need for Thelma suitable for flexible space. The cottage has two bedrooms with a bathroom for customers, but it can also cut the area when she is alone. It then uses only the connection zone, which houses the kitchen-dining room and utility, and steading, which contains the master suite and living areas.

Stuart worked with architect Liz Marinko in the planning stage. "The site is in the Cairngorm National Park and has been subject to strict controls, Stuart said. Liz helped me develop all planning applications. "It took 12 months to rebuild the property, which was completed in August 2014. Now the house is a versatile and bright space, sat respectfully in its beauty and blessed with panoramic views of the Scottish countryside.
Masonry is granite and whinstone, reused the original dilapidated buildings. "We have overthrown and had a big pile of stones to work with," Stuart said. "The building has been carefully reconstructed by local masons family.

cottage ( right) and steading are made from traditional local stone found throughout the region, while link building appears more contemporary. frameless glass elements bind together physically buildings, while allowing three structures remain visually distinct.
The steading is partially sunk into the ground, cutting into the earth behind as he gets up it seems to sit in the landscape.
"We kept landscaping minimum," Stuart said. "We have retained the existing levels, and used the local flora and any unused stone construction so that new buildings blend naturally into the surrounding fields.

main salon is in the steading. It is a double height space with tight above mezzanine. "The living room has a large corner window with deep oak sills," Stuart said. "It is a beautiful place to sit and watch the landscape beyond."

the Highlands experience extreme weather conditions, long hours of sunshine in the summer, at temperatures up to minus 20C. "It is a presentation site that deals with large amounts of snow, wind and rain, Stuart said. 'All architectural details, such as the glazed bridges had to be designed to take into account the weight of the snow load on them during the winter. "

The building connecting a steel frame structure. "This means that you can have large spans of glass with a minimal need for support columns, Stuart said. The result is elegantly contemporary but unobtrusive.

'I like the contrast of traditional materials with modern inner light, "says Stuart. "It was the heart of the design.
Stuart designed the kitchen and it was made for the MDF space with granite worktop. "Granite was treated, so it is dull," says Stuart.

"mom was obsessed with the kitchen!" said Stuart. She felt that it should be the vast and open plan, because it is the social center of the house. The structural steel frame system allowed the space to be completely free and open column. "There is a large kitchen island that is designed so that when you do the dishes, you have a wonderful view, Stuart said. "People can also sit on the island while the food is prepared.
The devices are all integrated for a homogenous look and there are storage masses. "Contemporary aesthetics is mainly my idea, with the concession that there must be an Aga, 'says Stuart. 'Strengthening the links in the middle is a wooden box with many contemporary details such as frameless glass windows and sliding doors. It is quite modern and accurate. If we put a cottage kitchen there, it would not have worked. "

the steading is coated Scottish larch locally sourced rear. "It is important to use local materials for aesthetic and sustainable reasons," Stuart said. "Properties have nearly half-wood, half stone construction, so there were a lot of local precedents for this.

glazing is an important element of the design. "Since the painted chunky wood windows steading and cottage, Swiss frameless sliding door system, the concept was to choose carefully and to maximize the views of the beautiful surroundings, Stuart said.
