Houzz Tour: An elegant courtyard apartment in East London warehouse - 'We love the industrial area: it is so clean and BIG, says Harvey B Brown-east London flat Victorian warehouse her and her husband, Steven, moved in all their former respective homes - a chic townhouse Hampstead '(Harvey) and (Steven) an apartment above the gastropub he opened.
nosing around inside, you could be forgiven for thinking the mix of decor styles - from pieces of metal with a factory feel curly, rock garden finishes - increased by a collection of things from two households, or architecture as urban pad. But, says Harvey, "we treated this place as a new beginning, and almost everything here is new to us." Surprising Less, given his career in the design and direction of the film, Harvey took a creative approach to within this sharp RAW-, open space. "It's almost like a movie studio, he says, and we have created small sets in open spaces.
The apartment is on the ground floor of a three story building sensitively converted by Gideon Purser Chris Dyson Architects. "When we started working, said Gideon," the building was used as offices, but it was originally a warehouse, beginning in mid-Victorian, although we have never been able to discover that it was stored there. It was quite intact inside, so there was a lot of character.
This industrial interior in great shape the direction of the design. Gideon and his team worked almost entirely with oak, concrete and brick. "Just three materials in the palette, he said. "We kept our work to a light touch and let them sing old original materials rather than compete.

a detail that are not original building is the garden of the attractive courtyard, which, with its lush living wall acts as a huge green artwork for the open-plan living. Create this was also the only chance to make the living space, since the other three walls are common walls and it was the only potential source of light.
The court several details that go really the size of the living area, as well as the creation of an open air urban soothing retreat. When the doors are open, "works as a lung green living wall, said Gideon. Moreover, a wall of the yard is fully mirrored - very thick glass attached with battens - and it gives the illusion of more garden. "When he came in, daylight has also increased dramatically," says Gideon.
"The living wall is self-watering and is a joy," Harvey said. "We grow many herbs in the wall, which is always great for cooking and giving this amazing smell when we dine outdoors.

Gideon explains how this feature beautifully green has arrived. "The original warehouse had a small set of loos where the court is now. When the building was converted [into an office space] in the 1980s, the loos were removed, leaving a semi-abandoned dark space covered with a polycarbonate roof. We removed it, exposing the area to the sky, and this formed the outer space.

the team Gideon removed an entire wall and put in a large steel beam - you can see here - as support. "It allowed us to open the room to the kitchen-dining room and in the yard," he says.
And if you are wondering about decorative figurines of the beam, they were a gift brother Harvey, who worked for a design company with a bulldog as a logo. "We just loved the logo, he said, so he bought us all!

Harvey and describes his style as Steven "eclectic". "I tend to be a minimalist, but with maximum trends, while Steve is a brutalist, but with sentimental tendencies," he says. "But we found common ground: we were both about love. Our work as freelancers is so chaotic that we really need a sense of calm in our home life. "
The couple chose the wide green leather couch, which overlooks the living area because they wanted somewhere big enough to entertain many people. "We loved the olive acid, said Harvey." The style and color remind us of a traditional gentlemen's club, but with a twist.

the kitchen worktops are Silestone, a quartz composite that looks like concrete. "concrete is not ideal for cooking because it is sensitive to stains and acid, Gideon said, "but we wanted to work plans to visually match the concrete floor.

the wall here looks like a giant mirror, but is actually glass. It creates a separate study area, but still connected to the main living area, where he borrows light. The office was decorated with an eBay find.
"I wanted to write my movie in our new home," said Harvey, 'and was looking for a large office that had an aura. This office shouting "sit here and write something important" and that's exactly what I did. "

another trick to bring more light in the apartment was the skylight above the kitchen. It is in fact a part of the terrace adjacent to the floor. "There is clause in their contract that states they are not allowed to put all the furniture on it, says Gideon. the large internal window-lined oak, which doubles as a small headquarters also provides flood light in the corridor behind her.

to improve insulation, Gideon had isolated the building from the outside, then made - it meant they were able to leave the masonry to the visible inside. The bricks are the walls of the original warehouse and those unpainted, in the kitchen, were treated with a clear matte sealer to make them easier to clean.

with the original masonry to consider, Gideon would not start cutting into walls to rewire the place. The solution was surface mount wiring, coating in conduits galvanized metal. "There was already a lot of this here, he said, and he was in harmony with the building.
The metal drawers were a find at the market Kempton Park, while the wardrobe just visible in the hall, which is used for guest coats, was a Paris market find. I always wanted one since being a child, "says Harvey. "It is a gateway to Narnia! Steven wired in LED lighting hidden, which gives off a soft romantic glow after dark.

'This is the most comfortable bed on the planet, "says Harvey. "The headboard is designed as pilot seats in a fighter jet. Because the bed is so huge and small, it tends to collect a pocket of warm air from the underfloor heating, so it is always cozy in winter!
