Houzz Tour: Bed-Sized Home A student in the desert - Frank Lloyd Wright may be associated more strongly with Oak Park, Illinois, where were his first home and studio, and Spring Green, Wisconsin where Taliesin is located, but on par with these two places is Scottsdale, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix. Here's where it created a second Taliesin - Taliesin West - and where he spent the winters in the last two decades of his life. Before extending the Taliesin Fellowship in the desert through the permanent buildings, he set up camp in a tent-like structure.
This approach to life in modest accommodation on the ground survives in homes that students of Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright building architecture school to date. One of them, designed and built in 2010 by Dave Frazee (now part of Broken Arrow Workshop) is a closed shelter that is raised above the desert floor for, as he says, "keep life desert outside. " As we shall see, the design is all about making small cozy space while allowing the occupant to enjoy the experience of life in the desert.

called Shelter Miner, the structure takes its name from the architectural ruins that were found on the project site, especially the concrete slab and chimney. Dave Frazee placed the box, he designed tangent to the chimney at the top of one of the walls of existing concrete, reinforced with two steel poles.

belief Wright there should be no obvious symmetry in construction in the desert led to distinctive asymmetrical rooflines of Taliesin West. Frazee design may seem like a departure from Wright's assertion, especially when you see from this point of view, where steel oxidized on the back and concrete chimney seem to create a symmetrical composition, but as we have seen in the first photo there is a clear directionality to the small structure.

This point view reinforces this supposed symmetry, but note how the left half of the shelter, the steel part coated (starting with the left edge of the window), cantilevers on the floor. This illustrates how the design meets the location, both in the reuse of an existing structure and to separate the interior of the wildlife below.

This point view is sheltered appears as a miniature of a house - a very modern, but a home indeed. I can see the garden bounded by side walls, large glass windows capture views and the solid anchoring of service nucleus of a side. This interpretation reinforces the approach of the school of learning by doing. Students learn construction, but they also learn that design skills are relevant to all scales.

These sketches Frazee illustrate the two main ideas for the interior: a small, l-shaped shelf and a view through the glass. With such a small space used mainly for sleeping, how much more is needed?

The tablet can be used to hold a book, but candles at night are more important; houses are off the grid.
The walls wood frame and ceiling are finished in plaster which gives the interior a similar appearance to a cave. The relatively small awning window becomes particularly important in space. This one in particular, also gives a view of part of the tree it sits next to.

The view through the glass wall with sliding door is something on a postcard, with a hill down to the cactus in the foreground. The concrete slab and the bottom wall are a civilizing element in this view of the wild desert. The position of the chimney in relation to the door allows a fire to heat the interior at night.

plan Room gives us a better idea of how the interior refers to the fireplace and paved outdoor area. It also shows how the steel panels are suspended out of the wall construction for creating an air space. Frazee described as "The air space allows the hot air to blow away from the structure, improving the insulation quality to the interior space."

This section really accentuates how the shelter is fixed on the landscape; messages that give additional support can be seen in the lower left. More subtle, but no less important, is the slight height on the roof. As explained Frazee, "Shelters are not usually locked, but can be difficult to sleep. Enclosing it is especially good in the rain, which can be heavy from December to April. "
Overall, there is a subtle design that responds sensitively to the situation while being a pretty place comfortable in the wilderness.
