Houzz Tour: A family home in Dublin is reconfigured to two - Over the years, a family home is gradually adapted to meet the changing needs of its inhabitants, but when the time comes for children fly the nest, it may appear suddenly in step with a smaller household. This 1920s house in Dublin had served his family, three generations had grown up in it, but as the children ready to leave the house, it was clear that much of the space would be lost without them if remained as it was.
It was time for a change. "It was a good opportunity to re-imagine the space, keeping in mind the owners would spend the next 30 years in the house together," said Colm Doyle, the architect who helped them achieve their vision.

The old flat roof extensions housed a separate TV room, kitchen and a billiard room; All three were badly lit and felt on the small size. "We have seen as a good opportunity to re-imagine the entire disposal on the ground floor and make it less complicated," said Doyle. "We showed our ideas to clients and they were delighted."
The old extensions were demolished and a new domed structure was built in their place. The new extension works almost the entire width of the property, with expansive glazing on both ends.

the functionality is the key to the kitchen. This meant incorporating good storage, plenty of workspace, and well positioned devices. "the owners love to entertain and are still cooking, he was therefore important that the work space for them, "says Doyle.

the central island has an abundance of storage with cupboards running around three sides. It also provides plenty of workspace, and a boiling water tap eliminates the need for a kettle. Grooves were cut in Silestone worktops to form a clean drain board, and an under-mounted sink maintains the streamlined surface.
Luminaires lenticchia are subtle, but make quite a statement. "Shadowlight consulted on the lighting of the house, and customers loved them," said Doyle. "They really shine with a golden color when they are on, and because they have a very fine wire, night time, they look like they are just hovering there."

an effective division of labor works well in this household - it is the cook, the other sets the table and washing up. to make it work for them, Doyle said in cutlery and crockery drawers, at the end of the dining room for easy access.
a large skylight provides additional lighting in the space. the new TV room, seen here in the corner, used to have a fairly small window. Doyle built in a large bay window to flood the space with light, and allowed the couch to be returned in full in for a magnificent view of the garden.

Farrow & Ball French Grey was used throughout the dining room, kitchen and dining space in the dark, middle and light tones, "to change the palette a little while keeping consistent, "says Doyle.

upstairs there are four bedrooms. Doyle did some reconfiguring here, too. the biggest change is in the master suite, which was a lot larger. the current bathroom was originally a suite and dressing room.
This there was a fireplace and chimney to the right of the three recessed shelves, which means the bed was forced into the corner. Doyle out of the fireplace and added the shelves. The bed is now centered and has a window overlooking the garden.

to give more homeowners walk-in wardrobe room / dressing, Doyle converted the existing study, changing the position of the door so that it now opens off the master bedroom rather than the hallway.

the bathroom was previously half the size it is now, and had just a small size glass window. "It was dark and gloomy," said Doyle .
He hit the bathroom and old dressing into one to create a large, bright space and installed two huge new windows. "They are timber-framed and they match the original windows around the rest of the house," he added.

The room is now comfortable, spacious and filled of light. Two pools provide ample space for the couple, and lots of storage underneath and adjacent to each. the work plan was set up the wall to dado height so that binds perfectly with the top of the woodwork.
"There were two Georgian antique mirrors in the house I loved," said Doyle , "so these were a nod for them. "heat pad behind the mirror to prevent fogging. Together with wall sconces, they give quite the art deco touches, perfect for a 1920s Maison
