Houzz Tour: A medieval palace Gets an Art Deco Update - There are not a lot of 1930 detached houses that require you to cross a ditch to gain entry. But then Eltham Palace is no ordinary pre-war property - in fact, the Grade II house has an illustrious heritage dating from the 13th century. In the late 1400s, the palace was an important royal residence - one in which Henry VIII spend much of his youth - but two centuries later, it had fallen into disuse.
In 1933 Stephen and Virginia Courtauld took over the lease and hired a team of international design to give the place a radical renovation Art Deco, with great extension, and - then - cutting edge technology, including a centralized vacuum cleaner, integrated speakers, central heating, electric refrigerator and a private telephone exchange. This spectacular metamorphosis has caused quite a stir at the time ...

When Stephen and Virginia Courtauld resumed Eltham Palace, he had long fallen into disuse. The Great Hall, built in 1470 by Edward IV, was one of the few original parts still standing building beside the moat and bridge.
Yet the renovation of the Courtaulds was despised by those who believed design has the historical integrity of the building at risk. To add to the concerns of dissidents, the Courtaulds of selected architects were barely out of college, and interior designer was an Italian aristocrat and eccentric, some say, a playboy.
