Houzz Tour: A Contemporary House that brings the Outside In - In 1973, architect W. Crutcher Ross has designed a house in Charlotte, North Carolina to Henry and Mary Miller. It was designed in the style Sea Ranch, inspired by the famous residences north of San Francisco that featured roofs and cedar facades spread like protection against the strong winds of the ocean. While the exterior is in accordance with this style, the interior was designed as a showcase for the business of Henry, tile Miller Company. A brown Mexican Saltillo tile covered most floors (where there was no orange carpet), and the tile was used in different ways and sometimes unexpected throughout the house.

Fast forward 40 years, and architect Mike Standley Liquid Design was faced with the renovation of the house for a couple with a vast collection of contemporary art . ( The house had other owners between millers and customers Standley, but very few changes have taken place in that time.) To create a more suitable environment to their collection, Standley abandoned tiles for a single light palette. The decor of the 1970s has given way to something brighter without obliterating completely the character of the house. And when customers approached Ross before his death in 2011, he gave them his blessing on the updated design.
