Houzz Tour: A medieval palace Gets an Art Deco Update - There are not a lot of 1930 detached houses that require you to cross a ditch to gain entry. But then Eltham Palace is no ordinary pre-war property - in fact, the Grade II house has an illustrious heritage dating from the 13th century. In the late 1400s, the palace was an important royal residence - one in which Henry VIII spend much of his youth - but two centuries later, it had fallen into disuse.

In 1933 Stephen and Virginia Courtauld took over the lease and hired a team of international design to give the place a radical renovation Art Deco, with great extension, and - then - cutting edge technology, including a centralized vacuum cleaner, integrated speakers, central heating, electric refrigerator and a private telephone exchange.
