My Houzz: Breezy Urban Style in a Hawaiian tropical paradise - The first time Sarah Schmidt came to Hawaii vacation was 15 years ago. At the time, she said, I thought I could live here, and I almost quit my job. "It was not only welcome break from his high work stress on Wall Street in New York. Sarah spent her childhood in the Bahamas, so it was not foreign to the relaxed island lifestyle. His round trips to Hawaii sparked his love of windsurfing and a deep desire to live more simply. Maui she felt a connection with nature and the people of the ocean-loving and knew this was the place she wanted to call home.
She bought a cottage of 1000 square feet on 3 acres of lush land in Makawao, on the north shore of Maui, with plans to use it as a holiday home. But as she worked long distance with the architectural designer Linda Lange and general contractor Todd Boyd, she decided to change the orientation of holiday home full time. The decision was made easier by his budding romance with Todd .
"The scope of the project changed once I decided to live in the house with Todd," she recalls. "I really poured my heart and soul into it! The result is a mixture uniform of the city and the island is a perfect fit for the couple.

the new house needed considerable efforts to turn it into a cozy, bright home. They opened the inside space . eliminating one of the three bedrooms Working alongside Todd, Sarah selected all - each paint color, finish, equipment and furniture. "It was a typical renovation first, then the next thing you knew, we tore it, she said. Todd tore the house down to the studs: Each door has been moved; each lighting fixture was changed; plumbing has been replaced; insulation has been installed, as well as solar attic fans.

500 foot long driveway leads to the cottage, which is in a closed area. Todd kept the roof, but changed the trellis on the ground level. He also planted fruit trees around the property, including tangerines, Valencia oranges, grapefruits, avocados, mangoes and a beautiful water white tree.

a corner off the beaten path of the great room is home to an antique desk from a second hand shop in New York. Foo dogs were found in the same store, and the painting was done by a friend of Sarah University, contemporary artist Marlena Chumo.

cooking open illustrates the attention to detail that has been paid to all renovations. Sarah was adamant on the white marble countertops, Todd said. After an extensive search, Todd came through two plates of white Italian marble statuary - a rare find in the Hawaiian Islands - in Central Maui Baseyard . The finished marble was used throughout the home, the kitchen island and countertops for bathroom floors and coffee table.

The original structure featured vaulted ceilings. Todd installed tongue and groove paneling wood to brighten the space. The floors are hardwood throughout Brazil.

Sarah is looking stoves on Houzz and fell in love with la Cornue of, but "they were just too expensive, she said. I wanted two ovens, but I had a certain amount of space. 'This fresh wood panel catamaran is out of my father in the 1960s, " Sarah said. "He kept the sign all his life. He was in New York and the Bahamas to his station on Harbour Island. "The sign was originally made by Roddy Choy. 'Nai'a' is the Hawaiian word for "porpoises".

The shower features 3- by subway tiles mat 6 inches by Ann Sacks in Mist, finished with a silver slurry. "The dull finish reminded me of old sea glass you can find the beach and the subway tiles are a reference to New York City, Sarah said. Todd created the marble shower the floor statuary hexagon 1 inch and was the border between the remains of the workplan. The window overlooks the citrus trees and has a canopy above to provide shelter against the sun.

Sarah, here with Todd, successfully combined its sophisticated urban trends with an appropriate aesthetic for the landscape of the island and lifestyle throughout the new residence. In the process, she discovered a passion for interior decoration, she is now pursuing full-time.
