Houzz Tour: An Australian house with an extension Eye-Catching - Chris Maher and Charlotte Kennedy execute their architecture and practice of interior design, Studio 53, to home and with three children all heading in their teens, have decided to expand and renovate their newly purchased workers but dilapidated house in Perth before moved. "The house had been spared for 0 years and was in desperate need of TLC, said Kennedy.
The House of Arts and Trades is on a relatively small area - 487 square meters - so that the options were limited when it came to adding more space. Kennedy said she and her husband also wanted to respect and enhance the existing expertise. The answer? A big yellow box.

The upper bearing level extension differs from the existing house in the form of a pure yellow "box", located above the ground floor. The box is then wrapped in a perforated screen in the shade and the sun.

internally, the box is its own zone, hosting the children's rooms, guest room and a bathroom. Externally, the box defines the character of the extension, highlighting the existing house changing contemporary house in a "friendly manner but mixed." Charlotte said the biggest challenge of the project has worked creatively within the strict policies the local council.

The furniture is a mix of original pieces and Midcentury other items and artworks collected on various trips, including a dining table and Eames walnut wood chairs.
Folding Doors open kitchen and dining area outside, which greatly increases the sense of space. An outdoor fireplace warms the space and a dining room with pool infiltration can also be used as a garage if needed.

the library is located in the extension surrounding the courtyard and pool. While the rest of the house is designed to gather with family and friends, this room is a sanctuary for a while.
"Throughout the design process, we reused the existing house and the elements to create a story of restoration recycled," says Charlotte. This included bricks recycling, lighting, and even the old wash tub, which is now a garden growing herbs.

"We are really enjoying our new home; i t gives us all we separate areas and provides areas to come together and be a family too, "says Charlotte. This gives us a lot of joy every day. "

screen surrounds the box on all sides. Inspiration for the design came from the floral carpets and original fireplace tiles. "The screen offers a visually rich, shade and protection of openings while providing passive monitoring capability of the street," said Charlotte.

claustras strategically placed to catch the breezes and provide cross -Ventilation. The house also incorporates double glazed skylight in the upper and lower roofs that can be programmed to open and close at different times the day, allowing the house to breathe naturally.
Double glazing, a palette of light and large cavity and the ceiling insulation ensures the house is cool in summer and warm in winter. The house also conserves energy because it is separated into living areas rather than extensive open-plan space.
