Houzz Tour: A Lakeside Manor House finds his style Country - This mansion of the 11th century with its own lake has an amazing history and location, on the edge of a beautiful rural village but when a family of five living in London bought the of grade II listed property was confused and failed. Anxious to transform in their dream home, they approached the architect Jeremy Lowe BLA architects and interior designer Emma Sims Hilditch for their expertise in what became a reconfiguration of two years.
Various extensions and additions were nailed to the house over the centuries, which led to an eclectic mix. "The building was divided fairly randomly over time," says Jeremy. "We streamlined the interior and restored many original features. A contemporary garden room was added, replacing a 1980-style orangery. "The idea was to have a minimal impact on the existing building," he added. "We wanted a more transparent without undermining what was already there. With the addition of the extension, t he whole page setting and the building has been changed, with great care taken to bring home the 21st century without losing its medieval charm.
Along with the practice, the interior was very dated. "They were rather old fashioned and stuffy; swags and tails very 'says Emma. Both the architect and designer emphasized the importance of restoring and enhancing the original features. "It was great to find the character and preserve what we could, by simply adding the better," said Emma. They transformed the property to create a space full of light that retains its traditional roots, but with all modern comforts. The project took about two years to complete, and was completed in summer 2013.

The family was eager to create an interior traditional English country. "They wanted classic fabrics and furniture, said Emma, so lots of wool and natural wood. They wanted to feel like a real country home without being too precious, "she adds.
This is the main gate of the use of the family to enter their home. The space was originally a small hallway that overlooked a pokey kitchen. "We hit by the original kitchen and hallway and makes the space more input," says Emma. After entering, on the left is a games room that overlooks a boot room and cloakroom, and on the right is a winter garden - an extension added by BLA Architects glass. The room "wiggling" around to allow the entry of the kitchen-dining room and pantry, plus a session.
The decor in the lobby was given as much attention as in the bedrooms. "We wanted something really nice in the room to give her character, Emma said. They had the curtains made from fabric Textiles Chelsea and had a custom-made door with glass panels to let in light. They also raised the ceiling that exposed beautiful wooden beams.

This is a second entrance to the property, but it is rarely used by the family as it opens onto the garden.
As the house is grade II listed, certain elements had to be carefully preserved. The main Chippendale style stairs, seen here, was one of them. Given the age and significance of the house, the preservative has been involved throughout the renovation project, the monitoring of conservation work.
A decorative chandelier provides a focal point in the corridor, and adds a touch of grandeur without being excessive. The tartan pattern on the stair runner continues the traditional ambience.

It was important the kitchen is both livable and functional. "It would be quite decoratively and a working kitchen," says Emma. "The family wanted to feel slightly eclectic, so they chose the darker pink as an accent color."
The shadow takes on the color in the slide stair tartan visible from the dining table. The direction of flow and continuity of color was very important to Emma in this project.
The custom cabinetry is by Neptune. Workplans are a combination of polished granite around the main sink, because it is a very practical material, and oak on the island, because it is a preparation area with a sink and Quooker- hot water faucet. The structural pillars pose a slight problem, but Emma said, "we have to work."

The glass extension was deliberately contemporary. "We wanted the building to be an honest representation of a solution of the 21st century, rather than trying to recreate something that belonged to a previous century," says Jeremy. "There is now a clear historical catalog of construction progress through time - and ours was the next step, he said.
The architects stripped all rendering and plaster the orangery which was already there to reveal the original stone, which they carefully restored. Jeremy chose the glass so that the stone would be visible from the outside, and the extension would have a minimal impact on the existing building.

the living room is the main living area for the family. There is a TV here, too, so it is an ideal place for everyone to relax on weekends. It is elegant, but not too precious, which means that younger children can spend time here without worry. All the furniture was made by Sims Hildith (except brown sofa), which internally upholsterers and carpenters. The wood paneling and shelves were all installed by the architect, in collaboration with Emma. A dated fireplace was replaced by an all new to give the room a sophisticated ambience.

the master bedroom has undergone a fairly dramatic change. "It takes a lot of help," says Emma. After an unsightly renovation in the 1980s that replaced the windows with unsightly modern, much work was needed. Emma flared window openings, so more light can enter the room. Shutters were used instead of curtains or blinds because of their height. As the curtains are not an option, Emma chose to add impact across the screen instead.
Emma also opened the entire ceiling. "We wanted to feel more important than the main room, so we found out all the old beams and stripped them of their black spot. He improved the entire room much, "she said. The lower beams were painted white so that they blend into the background.

There are two ways out of the master bedroom, although both need to go through another room to reach the stairs. One way is by studying the husband of the back staircase; the other is through the bathroom to the main staircase. "It was a challenge," admits Emma. "As the couple were the only two who would use the bathroom, we decided to keep open the door to free the easy way.

in the attic, there are two guest bedrooms and two bathrooms, as families often have friends and relatives to stay. The beds and throws were the customers' own. Emma wanted to keep it quite natural scenery in this room. "You are very high in the attic, almost in the trees, so I chose green to reflect that," she says.
