Houzz Tour: Spectacular Views Clifftop in Big Sur, California - Winters in Chicago can be difficult. According to the National Weather Service, last winter was one of the coldest of Chicago, the Windy City with raking the most days with or below zero temperatures ever recorded. Brr. These cool conditions (OK, downright freezing) are which led a family to start looking for a warm sunny life.
The rocky, picturesque cliffs of Big Sur coast in California finally won their heart and high body temperature. They found a small lot of hugging cliff and looked for a qualified architect could design something that does not slide into the sea.
While sitting in an airport one day, one of the owners was leafing through a magazine and came across the retreat of the Jackson family, a big house designed by architect Anne Fougeron. He loved the style and modern exterior copper. So he called Fougeron and asked him to design a house that celebrated the moderate views on climate and the Pacific heart race.

home is located on the rocky and rugged coastline on Big. The property is located downhill on a steep slope, which Fougeron used to his advantage.
"I had this idea of having the cascade house down the hill to enjoy the view as much as possible," she said. "Sometimes modern houses look like they have landed on the site of nowhere. We wanted to make indiscernible home site, fully integrated and following the contours. "

the house located 12 feet from the cliff and cantilevers outward. the engineers had to ensure erosion has not sent home in the ocean, they anchored the house with pillars drilled deep into the bedrock the cliff.
the owners wanted to be the best of their master bedroom, which is the only space that faces directly west towards the ocean. the living spaces face northwest, with views of both the terrain and the vast ocean.
There are actually a strategic advantage to this arrangement, said Fougeron. A western setting sun glare causes all sorts of problems out of the water, causing many waterfront owners to close all blinds and never enjoy the scenery.

the den / library is the heart and soul of the house. It connects the main bedroom and living areas, and is completely enclosed in glass. We used a lot of glass, said Fougeron. "When you have a view like this, you want to show as much as possible."
This is where the family gathers to enjoy the view and cross breezes, watch TV, read books and watch otters, whales and dolphins playing in the surf.
In fact, one of the owners coveted view as the corner window in this room actually looks through the main bathroom, because he wanted to be able to see a rock grouping in the bay below while sitting in this room.
Fougeron helped homeowners choose furniture that is original but not overbearing, she said. It also took all the stones to the house. The soils are calcareous. The fireplace surround is onyx.

This is the other side of the pit / library, which leads to the outdoor garden. Fougeron worked with a structural engineer to make the structure as light as possible.
The cutouts on the beams were the result of determining exactly how much material is needed to provide adequate support and deleting everything else. "It highlights the lightness of the room, the daintiness of it all, she said.

Fougeron designed the library 14 feet in height, which used to occupy his old desk. "Not many houses have this great fit for a library of this size, so I asked the owner if he wanted, and he said yes, she said.
The color support comes from sunlight hitting the colorful book covers and refract colors on the white wall. "It's like a light installation, Fougeron said.

the house is located in an area prone to wildfires - and it is far enough away that any fire department would take some time to reach home - if picked Fougeron non-fuel materials, such as copper panels and fire-treated wood frames windows, to outside .
The materials were to serve another purpose too. "Even if [the home is] 250 feet above the ocean, the air influence of the sea and the salt is spread," she said. Copper will continue to oxidize and provide a protective coating that never needs to be painted.
The window on the green roof is a light shaft that doubles as a vent for operating systems services public because Fougeron wanted to avoid having any sting vents on the roof of the main house. The green roof also covers a bedroom and separate bathroom, where the guardian of the property lives.

Fougeron designed the building structure to strategically protect the areas south of the northwest winds. Owners can stand in the garden or enjoy a glass of wine on the patio with friends without feeling like they are going to blow.

the living room is the highest point of the house. The front door opens onto a landing leading down some stairs; the house continues to cascade after the kitchen and down the stairs of the pit / library before ending the master bedroom.
The idea was to have the living room covered with natural materials, rather than Sheetrock. The drop ceiling wood adds warmth and helps define the living room, but also hides a built-in lighting and even the sprinklers of the house and smoke alarms for a clean look.
The furniture B & B Italia. One of the owners purchased the work at an auction. "He chose art that is a little edgy, and I think it works well in space, 'Fougeron said.

The climate is quite mild on Big so large doors slide away to give an indoor and outdoor feel. "When the weather is nice you live mainly outside," said Fougeron. "When the wind gets up to 70 miles per hour, that's when you shut everything up."
